Lower abdominal pain?

Hello doctor, for the past two to three weeks, I have been experiencing occasional cramping and slight sharp pain in my lower abdomen.
Sometimes, my stool feels like it has mucus on it, and at times it appears irregular in shape.
When I bend over, I feel pressure in my lower abdomen that causes pain.
Could you please tell me what might be the issue?

Dr. Chen Qifeng reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Hello: Based on the symptoms, it may be enteritis.
It is recommended to avoid oily foods, dairy products, and irritating foods, and to follow a bland diet.
If there is no improvement, a visit to a gastroenterologist is necessary.
Wishing you good health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Lower abdominal pain can be a complex issue with a variety of potential causes, and your symptoms suggest that it may be related to gastrointestinal or musculoskeletal problems. Given your description of occasional sharp pains, cramping, and the presence of mucus in your stool, it is essential to consider several possibilities.

Firstly, the presence of mucus in your stool can indicate an underlying gastrointestinal issue. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or infections can lead to changes in bowel habits and the appearance of mucus. IBS is particularly common and can cause abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel movements, including diarrhea or constipation. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate these symptoms, leading to a cycle of discomfort.

Another possibility is that you may be experiencing a form of colitis, which is inflammation of the colon. This can be due to infections, food intolerances, or autoimmune conditions. If the pain is accompanied by changes in your bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation, it would be wise to consult a gastroenterologist for further evaluation, which may include stool tests, blood tests, or imaging studies.

Additionally, your description of pain when bending or applying pressure to the lower abdomen could suggest a musculoskeletal issue, such as a strain or sprain of the abdominal muscles. This is particularly relevant if you have engaged in activities that require significant use of your abdominal muscles. Muscle strains can cause localized pain that may mimic gastrointestinal discomfort.

It is also important to consider other potential causes of lower abdominal pain, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, or gynecological issues in women, such as ovarian cysts or endometriosis. These conditions can cause referred pain to the lower abdomen and may require specific diagnostic tests to rule out.

Given your symptoms have persisted for two to three weeks, it is advisable to seek medical attention if you have not already done so. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. They may also recommend dietary changes, stress management techniques, or medications to help alleviate your discomfort.

In summary, lower abdominal pain can arise from various sources, including gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, or urinary issues. The presence of mucus in your stool and the nature of your pain warrant further investigation to identify the underlying cause. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with a clearer understanding of your condition and appropriate treatment options. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so do not hesitate to seek help.
