Issues with Ankle Screw Removal

Hello, I had surgery on my ankle in March of last year, during which screws were inserted.
It has been over a year now, and I am considering having them removed.
I am currently studying in the United States and participate in many sports teams.
I would like to ask how long it typically takes to fully recover after surgery to remove the screws and when I can start playing sports again.
I plan to return to Taiwan for the surgery during the summer break (end of May).
After the surgery, will I be able to lift weights after just over a month? I need to be ready for football when I return to the U.S.
in mid-August.
Would you recommend that I wait until next year for the surgery? Will delaying too long make it difficult to remove the screws? Thank you!

Dr. Wang Shouji reply Orthopedics

If the bone heals well, considering your age, having surgery at the end of May and engaging in intense exercise by August should not be a problem.
If you need another surgery next year, it shouldn't be an issue to remove it.

When considering the removal of screws from an ankle that has undergone surgery, several factors come into play regarding recovery time and readiness to return to sports. Given that you had surgery over a year ago, it is essential to evaluate your current condition and the specifics of your surgery before making any decisions.

Firstly, it is crucial to consult with your orthopedic surgeon regarding the necessity and timing of the screw removal. In many cases, screws can remain in place indefinitely if they are not causing any discomfort or complications. However, if you are experiencing pain or if the screws are impeding your mobility or athletic performance, removal may be warranted.

Regarding recovery time after screw removal, it typically varies based on individual healing rates and the specifics of the surgery. Generally, after the removal of screws, patients can expect a recovery period of about 4 to 6 weeks before resuming normal activities. During this time, you may experience swelling, discomfort, and a need for physical therapy to regain strength and range of motion in the ankle.

As for your specific timeline, if you plan to have the surgery in late May, you might be able to start light activities by late June or early July, depending on how your body responds to the procedure. However, returning to high-impact sports like football should be approached with caution. It is advisable to wait at least 8 to 12 weeks post-surgery before engaging in such activities, as this allows adequate time for healing and reduces the risk of re-injury.

Weightlifting can often be resumed earlier, but it is essential to focus on lower-impact exercises that do not place excessive strain on the ankle. You should consult with your physical therapist or surgeon about which exercises are safe to perform during your recovery. They can provide a tailored rehabilitation program that gradually increases in intensity as your ankle heals.

Regarding your concern about delaying the surgery, it is generally safe to wait a bit longer if you are not experiencing significant pain or functional limitations. However, if you notice any worsening symptoms or if the screws are causing discomfort, it would be wise to proceed with the removal sooner rather than later. Prolonged presence of hardware can sometimes lead to complications, such as irritation of surrounding tissues or delayed healing.

In summary, the timeline for recovery after screw removal can vary, but with proper care and rehabilitation, many athletes return to their pre-injury levels of activity. It is crucial to follow your surgeon's advice and listen to your body throughout the recovery process. If you have any lingering concerns or specific questions about your condition, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.
