Is it possible for middle school students' vision to improve?
I am 15 years old and do not have any congenital eye diseases.
Recently, my vision seems to have deteriorated to 0.2 in both eyes.
I have been using eye drops, but not every day.
Is it possible for my vision to improve? If I want to enhance my eyesight, what recommendations do you have regarding study time and rest periods? I have been preparing for the basic competency test and have been focusing on near vision activities almost all the time.
A Tsai, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/05/11
Dr. Zhuang Yamin reply Ophthalmology
Dear A-Cai,
Regarding your question, we first need to clarify the cause of your vision problems.
Is it simply a worsening of your prescription? What type of refractive change are you experiencing? (Myopia? Hyperopia? Astigmatism?) Are you currently wearing glasses? How is your vision with the correctly prescribed glasses?
At your age, it is common for refractive errors to change rapidly, but it is also a critical period for certain optic nerve or retinal diseases to manifest.
Therefore, a detailed examination is necessary to determine the cause of your vision deterioration and to formulate an appropriate treatment plan, as well as to assess the potential for recovery.
I recommend that you seek medical attention for an examination as soon as possible!
Wishing you good health,
Changhua Hospital

More Info
Improving vision, especially for middle school students, is a common concern, particularly as they engage in more close-up activities like studying and using digital devices. Here are some insights and recommendations based on your situation.
Firstly, it’s essential to understand that vision can fluctuate during adolescence due to various factors, including growth and increased screen time. The fact that you are currently using a medication like a mydriatic agent (often referred to as "瞳劑" in Chinese) suggests that you are under the care of an eye specialist, which is a good start. However, the effectiveness of such drops in improving vision can vary, and they are typically used for diagnostic purposes rather than as a long-term treatment for improving vision.
To address your question about whether your vision can improve, it’s important to note that while some individuals may experience natural improvements in their vision as they grow older, others may find that their vision deteriorates, particularly if they are predisposed to myopia (nearsightedness). Regular eye examinations are crucial to monitor your vision and determine the best course of action.
Tips for Eye Health and Vision Improvement:
1. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: When studying or using screens, take a break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye strain and allows your eye muscles to relax.
2. Limit Screen Time: Try to balance your study time with outdoor activities. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends spending time outdoors, as studies have shown that increased outdoor activity can help reduce the risk of developing myopia.
3. Proper Lighting: Ensure that your study area is well-lit. Poor lighting can cause eye strain, leading to discomfort and potential vision issues.
4. Maintain a Proper Distance: When reading or using a computer, keep the screen at least an arm's length away. This distance helps reduce strain on your eyes.
5. Stay Hydrated and Eat Well: A balanced diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E, along with omega-3 fatty acids, can support eye health. Foods like carrots, leafy greens, and fish are beneficial.
6. Regular Eye Exams: Since you mentioned that your vision has changed, it’s vital to have regular check-ups with an eye care professional. They can provide personalized advice and determine if corrective lenses are necessary.
7. Use Corrective Lenses if Needed: If your eye doctor prescribes glasses or contact lenses, wearing them as directed can help reduce eye strain and improve your overall vision.
8. Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes: This can lead to irritation and potential damage, especially if your hands are not clean.
9. Manage Allergies and Dry Eyes: If you experience symptoms like dryness or irritation, discuss these with your eye doctor, as they can recommend appropriate treatments.
Conclusion
While there is no guaranteed way to improve vision, adopting healthy eye habits can help maintain your current vision and potentially prevent further deterioration. If you are concerned about your vision, it is best to consult with an eye care professional who can provide tailored advice based on your specific needs. Remember, taking care of your eyes now can have long-term benefits for your vision and overall health.
