Frequent urination with a sensation of incomplete emptying?

Hello Dr.
Chou! I am a patient with kidney stones.
Two years ago, I visited Chang Gung Memorial Hospital for kidney stones, and last year, the stones recurred, so I went to Tri-Service General Hospital for treatment.
After evaluation by the physician, it was determined that I needed surgery to remove the stones through the urethra.
Since then, I have been experiencing difficulty urinating, and I am unsure if it is related to the surgery.
Currently, I feel as if there is something obstructing the area around my knee, which leads to a sense of weakness during urination.
Additionally, when I drink more water, I experience frequent urination.
I hope Dr.
Chou can help me address these concerns and advise whether I should seek further examination at the hospital.
Thank you!

Frequent urination and the sensation of incomplete emptying after kidney stone surgery can be concerning symptoms for patients. It is important to understand that these issues may arise due to several factors related to the surgical procedure and the underlying condition of kidney stones.

Firstly, after surgery for kidney stones, particularly if a ureteral stent (like a double-J stent) was placed, patients often experience changes in urinary habits. The stent is designed to keep the ureter open and facilitate the passage of urine, but it can also cause irritation to the bladder and urethra. This irritation can lead to symptoms such as increased frequency of urination, urgency, and a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying. These symptoms may persist for a few days to weeks after the stent is removed, as the urinary tract may still be healing.

Additionally, the sensation of having something blocking the urinary flow, as you described in the groin area, could be due to residual swelling or inflammation in the urinary tract following surgery. This can create a feeling of pressure or discomfort, which may affect the ability to urinate comfortably. If you are experiencing a weak stream or difficulty initiating urination, it could also be related to the surgical site or the presence of any residual stones or debris.

Frequent urination, especially if you are drinking more fluids, can also be a normal response as your body adjusts post-surgery. However, if you notice that your urine is consistently cloudy, has a strong odor, or is accompanied by pain, it may indicate a urinary tract infection (UTI), which is a common complication after urinary tract procedures. UTIs can cause increased frequency of urination and a feeling of urgency, along with discomfort or burning during urination.

Given your symptoms, it is advisable to follow up with your urologist or healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, urine analysis, and possibly imaging studies to rule out any complications such as residual stones or infections. It is crucial to address these symptoms early to prevent any potential complications and to ensure that your urinary tract is healing properly.

In summary, while some degree of urinary frequency and discomfort can be expected after kidney stone surgery, persistent or worsening symptoms warrant further investigation. Staying hydrated is important, but if you continue to experience significant discomfort or changes in your urinary habits, do not hesitate to seek medical attention. Your healthcare provider can offer tailored advice and treatment options based on your specific situation.
