How to Alleviate Stinging from Silian Ointment Use on Skin? - Dermatology

Using Silian ointment may cause stinging. How can I prevent the stinging sensation?

I visited a dermatologist today, and the doctor said I have acne, sunspots, and comedones on my face.
I was advised to apply Silian ointment.
When I used Silian before bed, it really stung, almost like it was burning, and I couldn't stand it; I kept scratching, which made my skin red! During my follow-up appointment, the doctor told me that this reaction is normal for most people, but I truly can't tolerate it.
Is there any way to prevent the stinging sensation? Thank you.

Hello, when using Silian ointment for the first time, you may experience some irritation.
It is recommended that if you feel very uncomfortable, you should temporarily discontinue use and wait for your skin to recover.
If you wish to use it again, you can apply a thinner layer or mix it with some lotion.

When using Silian ointment, or any topical medication, experiencing stinging or burning sensations can be quite common, especially for individuals with sensitive skin or when the skin barrier is compromised. Here are some strategies to alleviate the stinging sensation and improve your overall experience with the ointment:
1. Patch Test: Before applying the ointment to your entire face, consider doing a patch test on a small area of skin. This can help you gauge your skin's reaction to the product and minimize discomfort.

2. Moisturize Before Application: Applying a gentle, hydrating moisturizer before using Silian ointment can create a barrier that may help reduce stinging. Look for a moisturizer that is fragrance-free and formulated for sensitive skin.

3. Use a Thin Layer: When applying the ointment, use a very thin layer. Applying too much product can increase the likelihood of irritation and stinging.

4. Timing of Application: If you are using other active ingredients in your skincare routine (like retinoids or acids), consider spacing out their application. For example, if you use Silian ointment at night, avoid using other potent actives on the same night to reduce irritation.

5. Cool Compress: If the stinging sensation becomes unbearable, you can apply a cool compress to the affected area for a few minutes. This can help soothe the skin and reduce inflammation.

6. Avoid Irritants: Steer clear of other potential irritants in your skincare routine, such as exfoliants, alcohol-based products, or harsh cleansers. Stick to gentle, hydrating products to support your skin barrier.

7. Consult Your Dermatologist: If the stinging persists or worsens, it’s important to consult your dermatologist. They may recommend adjusting the frequency of application or switching to a different product that may be better tolerated by your skin.

8. Consider Your Environment: Environmental factors, such as dry air or extreme temperatures, can exacerbate skin sensitivity. Using a humidifier in your home or applying the ointment after a warm shower can help keep your skin hydrated.

9. Gradual Introduction: If you are new to using Silian ointment, consider introducing it gradually into your routine. Start with every other night and increase frequency as your skin adjusts.

10. Hydration and Nutrition: Ensure you are well-hydrated and consuming a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals that support skin health. Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins A, C, and E can be particularly beneficial.

In summary, while stinging can be a normal reaction to topical treatments like Silian ointment, there are several strategies you can employ to alleviate discomfort. Always prioritize gentle skincare practices and consult with your dermatologist for personalized advice tailored to your skin's needs. If the stinging sensation continues or if you experience any severe reactions, it is crucial to seek professional guidance to ensure the best care for your skin.
