Blood-streaked mucus in nasal discharge?
I have a rather sensitive nose, and when I come into contact with dust or feel a chill in my body, I experience nasal congestion and runny nose.
I often have a runny nose even when I am not sick, but it is not severe and does not affect my daily life.
However, today when I blew my nose, I noticed blood streaks in the mucus from my right nostril.
I blew my nose again and still saw the blood streaks, which were minimal but clearly visible.
After carefully wiping my nostril with a tissue, there were no traces of blood, and I did not feel any pain or notice any wounds inside my nostril.
I am unsure if there is a problem, and I would appreciate your advice.
Thank you.

Hello Way71: Based on your description, you are suffering from allergic rhinitis.
The symptoms of allergic rhinitis include nasal congestion, sneezing, and runny nose.
During sneezing, the pressure in the nasal cavity increases rapidly, which can cause microvessels to rupture, resulting in blood-tinged nasal discharge.
It is recommended that you visit our ENT clinic to obtain a nasal spray, which may help alleviate your symptoms.

When it comes to understanding blood-streaked mucus, particularly in the context of nasal discharge, it's important to consider several factors before determining whether to see an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist.
Firstly, the presence of blood in nasal mucus can be alarming, but it is not uncommon. It can occur for various reasons, ranging from benign to more serious conditions. In your case, since you mentioned that you have a history of nasal sensitivity and experience nasal congestion and runny nose, it is possible that the blood-streaked mucus is related to irritation or inflammation in the nasal passages.
Common causes of blood-streaked mucus include:
1. Nasal Irritation: Frequent blowing of the nose, especially if done forcefully, can cause small blood vessels in the nasal lining to rupture, leading to blood in the mucus. This is often seen in individuals with allergies or colds.
2. Dry Air: Dry environments can lead to dryness in the nasal passages, which can cause the mucous membranes to crack and bleed. This is particularly common in winter months or in air-conditioned spaces.
3. Allergic Rhinitis: Allergies can cause inflammation and irritation in the nasal passages, which might lead to blood-streaked mucus. If you are sensitive to dust or other allergens, this could be a contributing factor.
4. Infections: While you mentioned that you do not feel sick, sometimes mild infections can cause inflammation and bleeding in the nasal passages.
5. Nasal Polyps or Other Growths: In some cases, growths in the nasal cavity can lead to bleeding. This is less common but should be considered if the bleeding persists.
Given that you have noted the presence of blood in your nasal mucus without any accompanying pain, injury, or significant symptoms, it may not be an immediate cause for concern. However, there are certain situations in which you should consider seeing an ENT specialist:
- Persistent Symptoms: If the blood-streaked mucus continues for more than a few days or worsens, it would be wise to seek medical advice.
- Increased Frequency: If you start noticing blood more frequently or in larger amounts, this warrants a professional evaluation.
- Other Symptoms: If you begin to experience additional symptoms such as pain, swelling, fever, or significant changes in your sense of smell, you should consult a specialist.
- Underlying Conditions: If you have a history of bleeding disorders or other medical conditions that could complicate nasal bleeding, it’s best to get checked.
In summary, while occasional blood-streaked mucus can be benign, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms. If you notice any changes or if the situation does not improve, consulting an ENT specialist would be a prudent step. They can perform a thorough examination, potentially including nasal endoscopy, to determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment if necessary.
