Thigh swelling and pain?

Hello, doctor.
My mother has had varicose veins on the side of her thigh for many years.
Recently, for the past month or two, she has been complaining about her thigh feeling "uneven" in the front, and it hurts when pressed.
She feels like there are lumps, which are not visibly protruding but can be distinctly felt when pressed.
She also mentioned that the area feels warm lately.
What could this be? Thank you.

Xiao Li, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/07/25

Dr. Chen Sirong reply Oncology

Dear Sir/Madam,
Regarding your inquiry, it appears that the condition may be caused by venous distension, which can resemble a tumor.
It is advisable to consult with a general surgeon or a vascular surgeon for further evaluation.

More Info

When it comes to painful lumps in the thigh, particularly in the context of your mother's symptoms, there are several potential causes that should be considered. Given the description of the lumps being painful, feeling "lumpy," and the area being warm to the touch, it is essential to approach this situation with a thorough understanding of possible underlying conditions.

Possible Causes
1. Lipomas: These are benign tumors made up of fatty tissue. They are usually soft, movable, and painless, but can sometimes become painful if they press on nerves or other structures.

2. Cysts: Sebaceous cysts or other types of cysts can form in the skin or deeper tissues. They may feel like lumps and can become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and warmth in the area.

3. Varicose Veins: Given that your mother has had a history of venous issues, it is possible that she is experiencing complications related to varicose veins. These can lead to the formation of painful lumps due to the pooling of blood and inflammation in the surrounding tissues.

4. Infection: An infection in the soft tissues, such as cellulitis, can cause localized swelling, warmth, and pain. This would typically be accompanied by other symptoms such as redness and possibly fever.

5. Muscle Strain or Injury: If your mother has been active or has experienced any trauma to the thigh, muscle strains can lead to localized swelling and tenderness.

6. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Although less common, a blood clot in the deep veins of the leg can cause swelling, pain, and warmth. This is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention.

7. Soft Tissue Tumors: While less common, tumors (benign or malignant) can develop in the soft tissues of the thigh. These may present as lumps and can be painful.

Recommended Actions
Given the symptoms your mother is experiencing, it is crucial to seek medical evaluation. Here are some steps that can be taken:
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: A thorough examination by a healthcare professional is essential. They may perform a physical examination and ask about the history of the lumps, any associated symptoms, and any recent changes in her health.

- Imaging Studies: Depending on the initial assessment, the doctor may recommend imaging studies such as an ultrasound or MRI to get a clearer picture of the structures in the thigh and to determine the nature of the lumps.

- Blood Tests: If an infection or inflammatory process is suspected, blood tests may be necessary to check for signs of infection or other underlying conditions.

- Monitoring Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in the lumps, such as size, tenderness, or any new symptoms that may develop. This information can be valuable for the healthcare provider.

Conclusion
In summary, while there are several potential causes for the painful lumps in your mother's thigh, it is essential to have a healthcare professional evaluate her condition to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Early diagnosis and intervention can help manage any underlying issues effectively and prevent complications. Encourage your mother to seek medical attention promptly to address her symptoms and alleviate any concerns.
