Swelling of the little finger joint?

Hello, I have a question regarding my finger.
When I was in sixth grade, I sprained my right pinky finger while playing dodgeball.
At that time, I was young and didn't pay much attention to the issue.
Later, the joint of my pinky finger became swollen and has never gone down.
When I touch it, the swollen area feels hard, and I can bend my finger normally, but sometimes it feels sore.
Which specialist should I see for this? Is it possible for my finger to return to its normal size? Thank you!

Guo Xiansheng, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/07/28

Dr. Lu Daokuan reply Plastic Surgery

Typically, deeper contusions in the joints may exhibit a phenomenon of hyperplasia.
If it does not affect mobility, treatment may not be necessary.
However, if it impacts movement, surgery may be required to excise the excess bone tissue, and there is no guarantee that the original size will be restored.

More Info

When it comes to a swollen pinky joint, especially one that has been persistently swollen since a childhood injury, it is important to consider several factors before deciding on the appropriate course of action. Given your history of a sprain from dodgeball, it is possible that you may have developed some form of joint damage or chronic inflammation that has led to the current symptoms you are experiencing.

When to Seek Orthopedic Care
You should consider seeking orthopedic care if you notice any of the following:
1. Persistent Swelling: If the swelling has not resolved over time, it could indicate an underlying issue such as arthritis, a ligament injury, or even a bone fracture that may not have healed properly.

2. Pain: If you experience significant pain, especially if it worsens with movement or pressure, this is a sign that you should consult a healthcare professional.

3. Limited Range of Motion: While you mentioned that you can still bend your finger normally, any restriction in movement or discomfort during certain activities can be a reason to seek help.

4. Changes in Appearance: If the joint appears deformed or if there are changes in the skin over the joint (such as redness or warmth), these could be signs of inflammation or infection.

5. Functional Impairment: If the swelling or pain is affecting your ability to perform daily activities or tasks that require fine motor skills, it is advisable to seek care.

Which Specialist to See
For your specific issue, an orthopedic specialist would be the most appropriate choice. Orthopedic doctors specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, including joint injuries. They can perform a thorough examination, which may include imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs, to assess the condition of your pinky joint.

Potential for Recovery
As for the potential for your pinky joint to return to its normal size and function, it largely depends on the underlying cause of the swelling. If the swelling is due to chronic inflammation or a previous injury that did not heal properly, treatment options may include:
- Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can help you strengthen the muscles around the joint, improve flexibility, and reduce pain through targeted exercises.

- Medication: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help reduce inflammation and pain. In some cases, corticosteroid injections may be recommended to alleviate severe inflammation.

- Surgery: If there is significant joint damage or if conservative treatments do not yield improvement, surgical options may be considered to repair any structural issues.

Conclusion
In summary, given your history of injury and the current symptoms you are experiencing, it is advisable to consult an orthopedic specialist. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and recommend a tailored treatment plan. While there is potential for improvement, the extent of recovery will depend on the specific diagnosis and the treatment approach taken. Early intervention is key to preventing further complications and improving your hand function.
