Foreign body in the throat?
Hello, I previously experienced a sensation of something being stuck in my throat and noticed a small white spot when I looked in the mirror.
After a few days, it disappeared on its own, but occasionally, I still experience this situation.
What could be the cause? Thank you.

Hello: Common chronic laryngitis often presents with a sensation described as "gritty" or "rough." This is a form of chronic inflammation, and the small white secretions are primarily from minor salivary glands.
Generally, this is not a cause for concern, although a minority of cases may develop blisters that require active treatment.
Sincerely, Hsu Chia-Chen.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding throat discomfort and the sensation of something being "stuck" in your throat. This can be a common concern and can arise from various causes. Based on your description, it sounds like you may have experienced a transient issue that resolved on its own, but let’s explore some potential explanations for your symptoms.
1. Post-Nasal Drip: One of the most common causes of throat discomfort is post-nasal drip, where mucus from the nasal passages drips down the back of the throat. This can lead to irritation and a sensation of something being stuck. Allergies, sinus infections, or colds can contribute to this condition.
2. Tonsil Stones: The small white object you noticed could have been a tonsil stone (or tonsillolith). These are calcified deposits that can form in the crevices of the tonsils and can cause discomfort or a sensation of something being stuck in the throat. They can sometimes dislodge on their own, which might explain why it disappeared after a few days.
3. Pharyngitis or Laryngitis: Inflammation of the throat (pharyngitis) or voice box (laryngitis) can also cause discomfort. This can be due to viral infections, bacterial infections, or irritants such as smoke or pollution. Symptoms may include soreness, difficulty swallowing, and a feeling of tightness in the throat.
4. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can lead to a sensation of a lump in the throat, known as globus sensation. This occurs when stomach acid irritates the esophagus and throat, leading to discomfort.
5. Muscle Tension: Sometimes, stress or anxiety can lead to muscle tension in the throat, which can create a feeling of tightness or discomfort. This is often referred to as "globus pharyngeus."
6. Infections: Infections such as strep throat or other viral infections can cause swelling and discomfort in the throat. If you experience additional symptoms like fever, severe pain, or difficulty swallowing, it’s important to seek medical attention.
7. Allergies: Allergic reactions can lead to throat irritation and discomfort. If you have seasonal allergies or sensitivities to certain foods, this could be a contributing factor.
Given that your symptoms have been intermittent and resolved on their own, it may not be a cause for immediate concern. However, if you continue to experience throat discomfort, or if it worsens or is accompanied by other symptoms such as difficulty breathing, persistent pain, or changes in voice, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.
In the meantime, here are some general tips to help alleviate throat discomfort:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
- Gargle with warm salt water to soothe irritation.
- Use throat lozenges or sprays to relieve discomfort.
- Avoid irritants such as smoke and strong odors.
- If allergies are suspected, consider using antihistamines as directed.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to ask! Your health and well-being are important, and it’s always best to seek professional advice when in doubt.
