Regarding some medical aesthetics?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about the microneedling rollers and flying needles that some beauty clinics are offering for atrophic acne scars.
Do these procedures have any real efficacy for treating such scars? Additionally, if they are effective but not continued over time, will the scars revert to their original state? I would like to hear your insights.

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology
Atrophic acne scars are primarily treated with fractional laser and dermabrasion, with the main difference being the recovery time.
The results are noticeable, but multiple treatments are necessary, and achieving complete smoothness is not possible; this is something that should be discussed with the physician beforehand.
If treatment is halted midway, the results will still be maintained and will not revert to the original state, unless new scars are formed.

Microneedling and laser treatments have gained popularity as effective methods for improving the appearance of acne scars, particularly for those with pitted or atrophic scars. Both techniques aim to stimulate the skin's natural healing processes, promoting collagen production and skin regeneration, which can lead to smoother and more even skin texture over time.
Microneedling involves the use of a device equipped with fine needles that create micro-injuries in the skin. This process triggers the body's healing response, leading to increased collagen and elastin production. The treatment is generally well-tolerated, with minimal downtime compared to more invasive procedures. Microneedling can be particularly effective for superficial scars and can also enhance the absorption of topical treatments applied post-procedure.
Laser treatments, such as fractional laser therapy (including the Fraxel laser), work by delivering targeted energy to the skin, which helps to resurface the skin and improve its texture. Fractional lasers create micro-zones of thermal injury, which stimulates collagen remodeling while leaving surrounding tissue intact, promoting faster healing. This method is effective for deeper scars and can yield significant improvements in skin texture and tone.
Both treatments require multiple sessions to achieve optimal results. The exact number of sessions will depend on the severity of the scars, the individual's skin type, and the specific treatment protocol. It's important to have realistic expectations; while these treatments can significantly improve the appearance of scars, they may not completely eliminate them.
Regarding the concern about whether stopping treatment will lead to a regression in results, it is essential to understand that while the improvements achieved through microneedling or laser treatments can be long-lasting, they are not permanent. The skin continues to age and can develop new scars over time, especially if acne persists or if the skin is subjected to new injuries. Therefore, maintenance treatments may be necessary to sustain the results.
In summary, microneedling and laser treatments can indeed provide substantial improvements for individuals with acne scars. However, it is crucial to consult with a qualified dermatologist or skincare professional to determine the most appropriate treatment plan based on individual skin conditions and goals. They can provide guidance on the expected outcomes, the number of sessions required, and any necessary maintenance treatments to help maintain the results over time.
