Discomfort after a cold?

Hello, doctor.
I have been experiencing a cold for about a week, with recurring fever (three times), sore throat, runny nose, headache, and cough.
After recovering from the cold, I suddenly developed chest pain, shortness of breath, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, dizziness, fatigue, and overall weakness.
I also experience wheezing and can hear my heartbeat, which feels like my body vibrates with it.
My heartbeat is irregular, and I feel weak when speaking, walking, and during any physical activity.
Could you please explain why these symptoms have appeared? What diseases could I potentially have? I have also been experiencing poor appetite and weight loss daily.
Does this indicate a heart problem? Should I see a cardiologist, or is there another specialty I should consult? What tests might be necessary? Thank you! I'm feeling very exhausted...

Dr. Lin Jixiong reply Cardiology

Hello: The symptoms you described are mostly general symptoms.
To assess whether heart function has been affected, it is recommended to consult a cardiologist in the cardiology outpatient clinic for further discussion.
Thank you! Sincerely, Dr.

Post-viral symptoms, particularly after a cold or flu, can be quite common and may manifest in various ways, including chest pain, fatigue, and difficulty breathing. Your symptoms, which include chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue, and a sensation of heartbeats, could be attributed to several factors related to your recent illness.

Firstly, after a viral infection, it is not unusual for individuals to experience lingering symptoms. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as "post-viral syndrome" or "post-viral fatigue." The immune response triggered by the virus can lead to inflammation in various parts of the body, including the lungs and heart, which may explain your chest discomfort and breathing difficulties.
Chest pain can arise from several sources, including musculoskeletal pain due to coughing or straining during your illness, pleuritic pain from inflammation of the lining of the lungs, or even cardiac-related issues. Given your symptoms of dizziness and fatigue, it is essential to consider the possibility of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle that can occur after viral infections. This condition can lead to symptoms such as chest pain, palpitations, and shortness of breath.

Additionally, the sensation of your heart beating irregularly, along with fatigue and weakness, may suggest a condition known as postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), which can occur after viral infections. This condition is characterized by an abnormal increase in heart rate upon standing and can lead to dizziness, fatigue, and other symptoms.

Your decreased appetite and weight loss are concerning and warrant further investigation. These symptoms can be indicative of a more systemic issue, possibly related to your heart or another organ system affected by the viral infection.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. A cardiologist would be an appropriate specialist to evaluate your heart function, especially considering your symptoms of chest pain and irregular heartbeats. They may recommend several diagnostic tests, including:
1. Electrocardiogram (ECG): To assess your heart's electrical activity and identify any arrhythmias.

2. Echocardiogram: To visualize the heart's structure and function.

3. Chest X-ray: To check for any abnormalities in the lungs or heart.

4. Blood tests: To evaluate markers of inflammation, cardiac enzymes, and other relevant parameters.

5. Holter monitor: To record your heart's rhythm over 24-48 hours to detect any irregularities.

In the meantime, it is crucial to rest and avoid strenuous activities until you have been evaluated. Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet, even if your appetite is low, can help support your recovery.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to post-viral effects, they could also indicate more serious conditions that require medical attention. It is essential to seek a thorough evaluation to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and receive appropriate treatment.
