Right breast
Hello, doctor! My right nipple has been itching intermittently, particularly near the area with small openings.
When it itches, I scratch it, similar to how one would react to a mosquito or flea bite.
Even when it becomes painful, I still scratch it, resulting in both pain and itchiness, and this issue only occurs on the right side; the left side has never experienced this.
I have done some online research, and some people say it's not serious, while others warn it could be concerning, possibly indicating breast cancer.
Today, my nipple itched again, and when I touched it, I was alarmed to find something resembling a scab on the surface! I am very scared and unsure of what to do.
Should I see a gynecologist? Thank you, doctor!

More Info
It sounds like you are experiencing a concerning symptom with your right nipple, and it's completely understandable to feel anxious about it. Nipple itching, especially when accompanied by changes in the skin or the presence of scabs, can be distressing. Let’s break down your symptoms and discuss when it’s appropriate to see a doctor, as well as what potential causes might be.
Firstly, the itching you describe near the nipple area could be due to several benign conditions. Common causes of nipple itching include:
1. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: This could be due to soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents that irritate the skin. If you’ve recently changed any products, consider reverting back to your previous ones to see if the symptoms improve.
2. Eczema or Dermatitis: Skin conditions like eczema can cause localized itching and irritation. This is often accompanied by redness, dryness, or flaking of the skin.
3. Infections: Fungal infections or bacterial infections can also lead to itching and discomfort. If there is any discharge or unusual odor, this could be a sign of an infection.
4. Paget's Disease of the Nipple: This is a rare type of breast cancer that typically presents with symptoms like itching, redness, and flaking of the nipple skin. It’s important to note that while this condition can cause itching, it is not the most common cause.
5. Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones, particularly around menstrual cycles, can lead to increased sensitivity and itching in the breast area.
Given that you have noticed scab-like formations on the nipple, it is crucial to take this symptom seriously. While many causes of nipple itching are benign, the presence of scabs or crusting can indicate a need for further evaluation.
When to See a Doctor
You should definitely consider seeing a healthcare provider, particularly a dermatologist or a gynecologist, if:
- The itching persists or worsens.
- You notice any changes in the appearance of the nipple or surrounding skin, such as redness, swelling, or discharge.
- The scabs do not heal or continue to recur.
- You experience any other symptoms, such as pain, swelling, or changes in breast tissue.
What to Expect During Your Visit
When you visit the doctor, be prepared to discuss your symptoms in detail. It may be helpful to note when the itching occurs, any products you’ve used, and any other symptoms you’ve experienced. The doctor may perform a physical examination and could recommend tests such as a skin scraping or a biopsy if they suspect a more serious condition.
Conclusion
While it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the possibility of serious conditions like breast cancer, many cases of nipple itching are due to benign causes. However, given your symptoms and the presence of scabs, it’s wise to seek medical advice sooner rather than later. Early evaluation can provide peace of mind and appropriate treatment if necessary. Remember, your health is important, and addressing these concerns with a professional is the best course of action.
