Breast issues
Hello, doctor.
The report from my breast ultrasound examination has come out, and the doctor said it is a benign cyst in my breast and that it’s nothing to worry about, but didn’t elaborate further.
I would like to ask why there are cysts? Do they need to be removed? Is it really nothing to worry about? What should I pay attention to? Is there no need for further examinations?
Yi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/09/19
Dr. Niu Zhenyuan reply Surgery
Breast cysts are generally benign and can also occur in the liver, kidneys, and ovaries.
If they are large enough, they can be localized using ultrasound for fine needle aspiration.
Otherwise, regular monitoring is sufficient.
If a lump is detected through self-examination, a biopsy can be performed and sent for pathological evaluation to confirm the diagnosis.

More Info
Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can develop in the breast tissue. They are quite common, especially among women aged 30 to 50, and are generally considered benign, meaning they are not cancerous. Understanding breast cysts and their implications is essential for maintaining breast health.
What Causes Breast Cysts?
Breast cysts are primarily caused by hormonal changes in the body, particularly fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels. These hormonal changes can lead to the formation of fluid-filled sacs in the breast tissue. Cysts can vary in size and may feel like a lump or a soft, movable mass when palpated. They can be solitary or multiple and may change in size with the menstrual cycle.
Are Breast Cysts Harmful?
In most cases, breast cysts are harmless and do not require treatment. They are classified as benign lesions, meaning they are not associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. However, it is crucial to monitor any changes in the breast, including the size or shape of the cyst, or if new symptoms arise, such as pain or discharge. If a cyst becomes painful or bothersome, a healthcare provider may recommend aspiration, which involves using a needle to drain the fluid from the cyst.
When Should You Be Concerned?
While breast cysts themselves are not harmful, it is essential to differentiate them from other breast conditions. If you notice any of the following changes, you should consult your healthcare provider:
1. Changes in Size or Shape: If the cyst grows significantly or changes in shape, it may warrant further investigation.
2. New Lumps: The appearance of new lumps in the breast that do not feel like the cysts you have previously experienced.
3. Pain or Discomfort: If the cyst becomes painful or tender, it may require evaluation.
4. Nipple Discharge: Any unusual discharge from the nipple, especially if it is bloody or occurs without squeezing the nipple, should be evaluated.
Follow-Up and Monitoring
After a diagnosis of a benign breast cyst, routine follow-up may not be necessary unless symptoms change. However, regular breast self-exams and annual clinical breast exams are recommended to monitor breast health. If you have a history of breast cysts, your healthcare provider may suggest periodic imaging studies, such as ultrasounds or mammograms, to ensure that no new abnormalities develop.
Conclusion
In summary, breast cysts are typically benign and do not pose a significant health risk. They are often a result of hormonal changes and can be monitored without intervention unless they cause discomfort or exhibit concerning changes. It is always best to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider regarding any breast health concerns and to follow their recommendations for monitoring and follow-up care. If you have any lingering questions or concerns about your breast cysts or breast health in general, do not hesitate to reach out for further evaluation or clarification.
