Enlargement of the labia minora?
Hello, doctor.
I am 25 years old and have not had any sexual experience, nor do I have a habit of masturbation.
However, I have noticed that my left labium minora has gradually become longer and thicker over the past few years (I first noticed this about five years ago).
Recently, it has extended beyond the labium majus, and when I wear regular non-tight pants, it sometimes rubs against them during movement, which is uncomfortable.
The shape of my labium majus has also changed (it feels somewhat loose), and I occasionally experience a pulling pain at the junction point where the labia majora connects at the bottom (near the anus).
I would like to know if this condition is normal.
I understand that asymmetry in the labia is common, but since my situation has been gradually changing, I am a bit concerned.
I appreciate your clarification.
Thank you.

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the questioner: After puberty, due to the continuous stimulation of female hormones, the reproductive organs will continue to develop.
The labia may undergo varying degrees of changes during this time, and it is common for most women to have asymmetrical sizes on either side.
When the size is excessively large, it can cause inconvenience in daily life.
If necessary, a consultation with a gynecologist is recommended to evaluate the situation, and a minimally invasive surgical procedure (covered by health insurance) can be performed to improve and restore a normal symmetrical shape.
Generally, cases treated at our clinic have shown very good results.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

When it comes to changes in the labia, particularly in young women like yourself, it’s important to understand that variations in size, shape, and texture can occur naturally. However, the gradual changes you’ve described in your left labia minora, including increased length and thickness, as well as discomfort during movement, warrant a closer examination.
Firstly, it is essential to recognize that the labia can vary significantly among individuals, and asymmetry is quite common. However, the fact that you have noticed a progressive change over the past five years is noteworthy. Changes in the labia can be influenced by several factors, including hormonal fluctuations, weight changes, and even certain medical conditions.
In your case, the discomfort you experience when wearing non-tight clothing and the pulling sensation at the junction of the labia majora and the perineum could indicate a few possibilities. One potential cause could be an increase in skin elasticity or changes in the connective tissue, which can occur due to hormonal changes or other physiological factors. Another possibility is that there may be an underlying condition, such as a benign growth or cyst, that could be contributing to the changes and discomfort.
It is also worth considering that conditions such as lichen sclerosus or lichen planus can cause changes in the skin of the vulva, leading to symptoms like itching, discomfort, or changes in appearance. These conditions are not uncommon and can often be managed effectively with medical treatment.
Given your concerns and the changes you’ve observed, it is advisable to seek medical advice. A gynecologist or a healthcare provider specializing in women's health can perform a thorough examination to assess the changes in your labia and rule out any potential underlying conditions. They may also inquire about your medical history, any associated symptoms (such as itching, burning, or discharge), and conduct any necessary tests to ensure your health and well-being.
In summary, while some changes in the labia can be normal, the gradual nature of your symptoms, coupled with discomfort, suggests that a medical evaluation is warranted. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body, especially if they cause discomfort or concern. Seeking professional advice will provide you with clarity and peace of mind regarding your health.
