Hair Loss: Is the White Root Normal and Can Sesame Help? - Dermatology

Constant hair loss?

Hello Doctor: I have been experiencing hair loss for a while now.
Every time I wash my hair or blow-dry it, I notice a significant amount of hair falling out, mostly from the top of my head.
I would like to ask if the hair roots that have a white bulb indicate normal hair shedding.
Can I use the presence of the white bulb at the root of the fallen hair to determine if the hair follicles are damaged and whether new hair will grow back? I am very concerned that my hair will continue to fall out without regrowing...
Additionally, does consuming more sesame seeds help in promoting faster hair growth and improving hair loss?

Zi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/11/09

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology

There are many types and causes of hair loss, and different considerations apply to different genders.
It is essential to examine the scalp and analyze the fallen hair.
It is recommended that you seek medical attention as soon as possible to identify the cause of your hair loss.

Hair loss can be a concerning issue for many individuals, and understanding the underlying causes and the significance of the hair root can provide some reassurance. When you notice that the hair roots are white, it is important to understand what this indicates. The white bulb at the end of the hair strand is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. This bulb is essentially the hair follicle's root sheath, which is a sign that the hair has shed naturally. In a healthy hair growth cycle, it is normal to lose between 50 to 100 hairs per day, and the presence of a white root typically indicates that the hair has fallen out due to the natural shedding process rather than damage to the follicle.

However, if you are experiencing excessive hair loss, particularly concentrated in one area such as the top of your head, it may be worth investigating further. Conditions such as androgenetic alopecia (commonly known as male or female pattern baldness), telogen effluvium (temporary hair loss due to stress or hormonal changes), or other underlying health issues could be contributing factors. If you are concerned about the health of your hair follicles and whether they are capable of producing new hair, it may be beneficial to consult with a dermatologist or a trichologist. They can perform a thorough examination and possibly recommend tests to assess the health of your scalp and hair follicles.

Regarding your question about sesame seeds, there is some anecdotal evidence suggesting that sesame seeds may have beneficial effects on hair health. Sesame seeds are rich in nutrients such as zinc, calcium, and vitamin E, which are essential for healthy hair growth. Additionally, they contain lignans, which may help to improve blood circulation to the scalp and promote hair growth. While incorporating sesame seeds into your diet can be a healthy choice, it is important to remember that no single food can guarantee faster hair growth or prevent hair loss. A balanced diet, rich in vitamins and minerals, along with proper hair care practices, is essential for maintaining healthy hair.

In summary, the presence of a white root on fallen hair is generally a normal sign of hair shedding. However, if you are experiencing significant hair loss, it is advisable to seek professional advice to rule out any underlying conditions. Incorporating nutrient-rich foods like sesame seeds into your diet may support overall hair health, but it should be part of a comprehensive approach to hair care that includes a balanced diet, proper hair hygiene, and possibly medical intervention if necessary.

Regarding the white hair, I'm not certain, as there is no absolute treatment for it. For hair loss, a physical examination of the scalp and hair follicles is necessary to make an accurate assessment.
