When is the best time to have a blood test for hormone levels?

Hello, doctor: I have been relying on menstrual induction medication for the past four months to get my period.
Both the ultrasound examinations of my uterus and ovaries showed no abnormalities.
The obstetrician-gynecologist mentioned that I shouldn't take the induction medication too many times, so they recommended that I go to the hospital for a blood test to understand my hormone levels.
Later, when I went to the hospital, the doctor told me that just because the ultrasound of my uterus and ovaries is normal doesn't mean there are no issues.
I need to continue taking the induction medication and that the best time to test is on the 2nd or 3rd day of my period for the most accurate results.
When is the best time to test for accuracy? I'm really worried! (The tests include FSH, LH, progesterone, and estrogen.) Thank you!

Hello: Your physician understands your condition and has conducted relevant examinations.
After providing appropriate treatment, they have also scheduled your next check-up.
Please follow the timing suggested by your physician.
Adjustments to your menstrual cycle may take some time, so a little patience is needed.
Thank you!

When it comes to testing hormones, particularly in relation to the menstrual cycle, timing is crucial for obtaining accurate results. In your case, since you have been relying on medication to induce menstruation, it is essential to understand how this affects hormone levels and when to conduct the tests.

For women with regular menstrual cycles, hormone levels fluctuate throughout the cycle. The best time to test for certain hormones, such as FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone), LH (Luteinizing Hormone), progesterone (often referred to as luteal hormone), and estrogen, is typically during specific phases of the cycle. For example, FSH and LH are usually measured on cycle day 2 or 3, which is right after menstruation has started. This timing allows for an accurate assessment of the baseline hormone levels before the follicular phase begins.

In your case, since you have been using medication to induce your menstrual cycle, it is important to follow your doctor's advice regarding the timing of the tests. The recommendation to test on the 2nd or 3rd day of your menstrual cycle is based on the need to measure hormone levels when they are at their baseline, which provides a clearer picture of your hormonal health. This is particularly important for FSH and LH, as their levels can indicate how well your ovaries are functioning and whether there are any underlying issues affecting your reproductive health.

Progesterone testing is typically done during the luteal phase, which occurs about a week after ovulation. However, if you are not ovulating regularly due to the use of medication, this may complicate the timing for progesterone testing. In such cases, your healthcare provider may suggest alternative timing or additional tests to assess your hormonal balance.

It is also worth noting that the use of medications to induce menstruation can sometimes mask underlying hormonal issues. While ultrasound results may show no abnormalities, hormonal imbalances can still exist and affect your overall reproductive health. Therefore, it is essential to follow through with the recommended blood tests to gain a comprehensive understanding of your hormone levels.

In summary, the best time to test hormones after a menstrual cycle, especially when using medication to induce menstruation, is typically on the 2nd or 3rd day of your cycle for FSH and LH. For progesterone, timing may vary based on your ovulation status. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and to ensure that you are receiving the most accurate assessments of your hormonal health. Regular monitoring and testing can help identify any issues early on and guide appropriate treatment options.
