Are nasal strips effective? What are the long-term effects of using them?
Hello, doctor! I have a lot of blackheads, and I currently use nose strips about once a week.
I've been using them continuously for two to three years, and each time I pull out quite a few blackheads, but they grow back afterward.
I would like to ask the doctor, do nose strips really work? What are the long-term side effects of using them? Could they cause the pores on my nose to become larger? Additionally, after pulling out some larger blackheads, there is a noticeable indentation on my nose.
What should I do about that? Thank you!
KK, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/01/06
Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology
Using nose strips once a week should be harmless and will not enlarge the pores.
The key point is that acne is a normal physiological phenomenon, and its severity varies from person to person.
It is advisable to use products that promote the metabolism of acne regularly, such as salicylic acid or retinoids.
If there are indentations, one can use some astringent toners or low-concentration alpha hydroxy acids.

More Info
Nose strips, commonly used for removing blackheads, can be effective in the short term for extracting surface debris and oil from the pores. They work by adhering to the skin and pulling out impurities when removed. However, while they may provide immediate satisfaction by visibly removing blackheads, their long-term effectiveness and potential negative effects warrant careful consideration.
Effectiveness of Nose Strips
1. Immediate Results: Nose strips can effectively remove blackheads and other impurities from the surface of the skin. They can give the appearance of cleaner pores and smoother skin immediately after use.
2. Temporary Solution: The results from using nose strips are temporary. Blackheads are formed when pores become clogged with excess oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. Since nose strips only remove the top layer of debris, they do not address the underlying causes of blackhead formation. Therefore, blackheads will likely reappear over time, often leading to a cycle of repeated use.
Long-Term Effects
1. Skin Irritation: Frequent use of nose strips can lead to skin irritation. The adhesive used in these strips can strip away not only the blackheads but also essential oils and moisture from the skin, leading to dryness, redness, and irritation.
2. Enlarged Pores: There is a concern that regular use of nose strips may contribute to enlarged pores. When the skin is repeatedly pulled and tugged, it can lose elasticity over time, potentially leading to more noticeable pores.
3. Skin Damage: If used excessively, nose strips can cause micro-tears in the skin, which may lead to inflammation and even scarring. The visible "dents" or "holes" you notice after using the strips could be a sign of this type of damage.
4. Dependency: Relying on nose strips can create a dependency on them for managing blackheads. This can prevent individuals from exploring more effective long-term solutions, such as proper skincare routines, exfoliation, and treatments that target the root causes of blackheads.
Recommendations
1. Balanced Skincare Routine: Instead of relying solely on nose strips, consider incorporating a comprehensive skincare routine that includes gentle exfoliation, regular cleansing, and the use of non-comedogenic products. Ingredients like salicylic acid can help prevent blackheads by keeping pores clear.
2. Professional Treatments: For persistent blackheads, consider consulting a dermatologist. Professional treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or extractions can provide more effective and lasting results.
3. Moisturization: Ensure that your skin remains hydrated. Using a suitable moisturizer can help maintain skin elasticity and prevent the overproduction of oil, which contributes to blackhead formation.
4. Patch Testing: If you continue to use nose strips, consider doing so less frequently and monitor your skin's response. Always perform a patch test to avoid adverse reactions.
In conclusion, while nose strips can provide a quick fix for blackheads, they are not a sustainable solution for long-term skin health. It's essential to adopt a holistic approach to skincare that addresses the underlying issues contributing to blackhead formation while minimizing potential damage to the skin.
