Post-Scleral Buckling Surgery: Can I Wear Contact Lenses? - Ophthalmology

Scleral buckle surgery

Hello Doctor, I have undergone scleral buckle surgery for retinal detachment in my left eye 40 days ago.
At the time of diagnosis, the macula was not affected, so my current corrected vision is 1.0.
However, I still notice that the white part of my left eye near the lower edge of the cornea is red.
Due to work requirements, I need to wear contact lenses for about 9 to 10 hours a day starting in a week.
Is this advisable? (I previously tried wearing them for five minutes, and when I took them off, the red area felt painful.) Additionally, will working as a flight attendant have any adverse effects on this condition? Thank you, Doctor.

Dr. He Jianxian reply Ophthalmology

Hello: Since it has been 40 days, the surface wound has mostly healed, and wearing contact lenses should not be an issue, although wearing them for extended periods may not be ideal.
Additionally, the impact of working as a flight attendant on this condition should be manageable, so there is no need to worry too much.
Wishing you peace and good health.

After undergoing scleral buckling surgery for retinal detachment, it is crucial to prioritize the healing process and follow your ophthalmologist's recommendations regarding the use of contact lenses. Generally, after such a procedure, the eye requires time to heal, and wearing contact lenses too soon can potentially lead to complications, including irritation, infection, or even further damage to the eye.

In your case, since it has been 40 days post-surgery and you are experiencing some redness and discomfort in the white part of your eye, it is essential to approach the situation with caution. The redness you describe could indicate inflammation or irritation, which may be exacerbated by wearing contact lenses. The fact that you experienced a stinging sensation after trying to wear them for just five minutes suggests that your eye may not yet be ready for the added stress of contact lenses.

Typically, the timeline for resuming contact lens wear after scleral buckling surgery can vary based on individual healing and the specific circumstances of the surgery. Many ophthalmologists recommend waiting at least several weeks to a few months before considering contact lenses, especially if there are any signs of irritation or discomfort. It is essential to have a follow-up appointment with your eye doctor to assess the healing of your eye and to discuss the appropriate time to resume wearing contact lenses.

Regarding your question about working as a flight attendant, it is important to consider the demands of the job. Flight attendants often work in environments with fluctuating cabin pressures and low humidity, which can be challenging for someone recovering from eye surgery. The dry air in an airplane cabin can exacerbate any existing discomfort or irritation in your eyes. Additionally, the physical demands of the job, including lifting and moving, may not be ideal during your recovery period.

In summary, before making any decisions about wearing contact lenses or returning to work as a flight attendant, it is crucial to consult with your ophthalmologist. They can provide personalized advice based on your healing progress and any specific concerns you may have. They may recommend waiting until your eye has fully healed and any redness or discomfort has resolved before considering contact lenses. Your eye health is paramount, and ensuring a complete recovery should be your top priority.
