Flashing lights in the left eye?
Hello, for the past week, when I focus on an object or read, I notice that there is a flickering in my left eye's peripheral vision (it's not white flashes or small black dots, just flickering).
When I shift my gaze, it stops, but when I focus again or read, the flickering in my left eye's peripheral vision reappears.
I would like to ask what this condition might be? (My right eye does not seem to have the same issue at the moment.) Thank you.

When the eyeball moves, it may cause traction of the vitreous on the retina, leading to flashes of light.
In such cases, one should consult an ophthalmologist for a fundus examination.
If there are any retinal tears, immediate laser treatment should be performed.

Flashing lights in the eye, particularly when localized to one eye, can be concerning and may indicate various underlying conditions. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing intermittent flashes or flickering in your left eye when you focus on an object or read. This phenomenon can be attributed to several potential causes, which I will outline below.
1. Vitreous Detachment: One of the most common causes of flashes of light is vitreous detachment. The vitreous is a gel-like substance that fills the eye. As we age, it can shrink and pull away from the retina, leading to the perception of flashes of light. This is often described as seeing "lightning" or "flashes" in the peripheral vision. If this is the case, it is crucial to monitor for any changes, as it can sometimes lead to retinal tears or detachment.
2. Retinal Issues: Flashes can also be a sign of retinal problems, such as retinal tears or detachment. When the retina is stimulated by the vitreous pulling on it, it can create the sensation of light flashes. This is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention, as it can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated promptly.
3. Migraine Aura: Even if you do not have a history of migraines, some individuals experience visual disturbances known as migraine aura. These can include flashes of light or zigzag patterns in the vision, often without the headache that typically accompanies migraines. This can occur in one eye or both and may be triggered by stress, certain foods, or changes in sleep patterns.
4. Ocular Migraines: Similar to migraine aura, ocular migraines can cause temporary visual disturbances, including flashes of light. These usually resolve within a short period and may not be accompanied by a headache.
5. Optical Illusions: Sometimes, the brain can misinterpret signals from the eyes, leading to the perception of flashes or flickering lights. This can happen due to fatigue, stress, or prolonged focus on a single object.
6. Dry Eye Syndrome: Dry eyes can lead to visual disturbances, including flickering or flashing sensations. This is often exacerbated by prolonged screen time or reading without breaks.
7. Neurological Issues: Although less common, neurological conditions affecting the visual pathways can also cause flashing lights. This includes issues in the brain or optic nerve that may require further investigation.
Given that your symptoms are specific to your left eye and occur when you focus on an object, it is advisable to seek a comprehensive eye examination from an ophthalmologist. They may perform a dilated eye exam to check for any signs of retinal detachment or other ocular issues. Additionally, they may recommend imaging studies if they suspect any neurological involvement.
In summary, while there are several benign explanations for the flashing lights you are experiencing, it is essential to rule out more serious conditions, especially those related to the retina. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preserving your vision and addressing any underlying issues. If the flashes persist or worsen, or if you experience additional symptoms such as a sudden increase in floaters, loss of peripheral vision, or a curtain-like shadow over your vision, seek medical attention immediately.
