How is balanoposthitis considered healed?
Hello Doctor: I wash my foreskin and glans almost every day, but I recently engaged in unprotected oral sex and developed balanitis.
On the first day, I noticed a small red spot; by the second day, there were many more red spots; and by the third day, the skin started to appear wrinkled.
I visited a doctor on the third day and received a small tube of Clindamycin-V cream.
The doctor advised me to apply the medication after showering.
However, the glans continues to look wrinkled, and there is no itching, pain, or other discharge.
I would like to ask how long I need to apply this medication for a complete cure? I have been applying the cream for three days now, and the glans still appears wrinkled.

Balanitis, or inflammation of the glans penis, can be caused by various factors, including infections, irritants, or allergic reactions. In your case, it seems that the condition developed after engaging in unprotected oral sex, which may have introduced irritants or pathogens leading to the inflammation.
The healing process of balanitis can vary depending on the underlying cause and the treatment provided. Since you mentioned that you have been using a topical medication (likely a corticosteroid or antifungal cream) prescribed by your doctor, it's important to follow the instructions given for the application of the medication. Typically, these creams are applied once or twice daily after washing the affected area, and it may take several days to see significant improvement.
Here are some key points to consider regarding the healing process and what to expect:
1. Duration of Treatment: The duration of treatment can vary. While some patients may notice improvement within a few days, others may take longer, especially if the inflammation is more severe. It’s not uncommon for the skin to appear wrinkled or dry during the healing process, as the inflammation subsides and the skin begins to repair itself. Continue applying the medication as directed, and if there is no improvement after a week or so, follow up with your healthcare provider.
2. Signs of Improvement: Look for signs of improvement such as a reduction in redness, swelling, and any discomfort. The skin may still appear wrinkled or dry even as the inflammation resolves. If you notice any worsening symptoms, such as increased redness, pain, or discharge, it is crucial to contact your doctor.
3. Hygiene Practices: Maintaining good hygiene is essential in the healing process. Continue to gently wash the area with mild soap and water, and avoid any irritants, including harsh soaps or lotions. After washing, pat the area dry instead of rubbing it.
4. Avoiding Irritants: Until the condition resolves, it’s advisable to avoid any activities that may irritate the area further, such as sexual activity or using products that could cause an allergic reaction.
5. Follow-Up Care: If the condition does not improve with the current treatment, or if you have concerns about the ongoing symptoms, it’s important to return to your healthcare provider. They may consider alternative diagnoses or treatments, such as antifungal medications if a fungal infection is suspected, or further evaluation for other underlying conditions.
6. Potential Complications: While most cases of balanitis resolve with appropriate treatment, untreated or recurrent balanitis can lead to complications such as phimosis (inability to retract the foreskin) or scarring. Therefore, it’s important to monitor your symptoms closely.
In summary, while the initial appearance of the skin may be concerning, it is not uncommon for the skin to appear wrinkled during the healing process. Continue to apply the medication as directed, maintain good hygiene, and monitor for any changes. If you have any concerns or if symptoms persist, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice. Your healthcare provider can offer guidance tailored to your specific situation and ensure that you receive the appropriate care.
