Does taking progesterone too early affect ovulation and fertilization?

Hello Doctor: I want to get pregnant, so this month I took ovulation medication and received an ovulation trigger injection on March 21st at noon.
The doctor prescribed 14 days of progesterone (Provera Fuan, white pentagon shape) to take after intercourse.
I had intercourse on the evening of March 22nd, but since I planned to sleep right after, I took one dose of progesterone before intercourse.
However, I later read online that progesterone should not be taken too early, as it may affect ovulation and fertilization.
Doctor, what is the likelihood of me getting pregnant this time? Could it potentially act as a contraceptive? Thank you.

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, generally, progesterone is taken after ovulation.
Taking just one dose of progesterone should not affect ovulation or fertilization, so you don't need to worry excessively.
Wishing you good health and a successful pregnancy.
Sincerely, Dr.

Taking progesterone too early in your cycle can indeed raise concerns regarding its impact on ovulation and fertilization. Progesterone is a hormone that plays a crucial role in the menstrual cycle and in maintaining pregnancy. It is typically produced by the corpus luteum after ovulation, and its primary function is to prepare the uterine lining for a potential pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, progesterone levels drop, leading to menstruation.

In your case, you mentioned that you took progesterone (Provera) shortly after having intercourse on March 22, following an ovulation trigger shot on March 21. The timing of progesterone administration is critical. If taken too early, it can potentially interfere with the natural hormonal signals that promote ovulation. However, since you had already received an ovulation trigger shot, it is likely that ovulation had already occurred by the time you took the progesterone.

The concern about taking progesterone too early primarily revolves around its ability to signal the body that ovulation has already occurred, which may inhibit further ovulation in a normal cycle. However, in your situation, since you were already in the luteal phase (the phase after ovulation), taking progesterone is generally intended to support the uterine lining and enhance the chances of implantation if fertilization has occurred.

Regarding your worry about whether this could act as a form of contraception, it is important to note that progesterone does not prevent fertilization if ovulation has already taken place. Instead, it helps maintain the uterine environment for a fertilized egg. Therefore, if ovulation occurred as expected, taking progesterone afterward should not negate your chances of conception.

In summary, while there are concerns about the timing of progesterone administration, in your case, since you had already ovulated, taking it after intercourse should not significantly lower your chances of becoming pregnant. It is always best to follow your healthcare provider's instructions regarding medication timing, especially when trying to conceive. If you have further concerns or experience any unusual symptoms, it is advisable to consult your doctor for personalized guidance.

In addition to medication, factors such as overall health, timing of intercourse relative to ovulation, and lifestyle choices can also influence fertility. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and ensuring proper nutrition can all contribute positively to your chances of conception. If you continue to have concerns about your fertility or the medications you are taking, consider discussing them with a fertility specialist who can provide tailored advice based on your specific situation.
