Is My Girlfriend Pregnant or Experiencing Menstrual Irregularities? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Uncertain whether my girlfriend is experiencing pregnancy symptoms or signs of amenorrhea?

My girlfriend started her menstrual period on January 11, 2013, and we engaged in mutual touching without a condom on February 4, but there was no sexual intercourse or ejaculation (including withdrawal).
However, my hand had touched my secretions before I touched her genital area.
She still had her period on February 9, and after school started, she participated in team training.
Her menstrual cycle was previously very regular, but since March, her period has not come.
It has been 48 days since February 9.
I would like to know if this situation could be due to a very small chance of pregnancy or if it is related to increased physical activity, nutritional changes, or reduced body fat leading to the absence of her period.

Dear Yang: Hello, the probability of pregnancy is very low, but to be sure, I recommend that you buy a home pregnancy test to check your urine.
There are many reasons that could cause a missed period, aside from pregnancy, such as stress, lack of sleep, being overweight or underweight, which are all common causes.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

Based on the information provided, it appears that your girlfriend is experiencing a significant delay in her menstrual cycle, which has lasted for 48 days since her last period on February 9. Given that her menstrual cycles were previously regular, this change can be concerning and may lead to questions about potential pregnancy or other underlying issues.

First, let's address the possibility of pregnancy. The scenario you described—mutual touching without penetration or ejaculation—generally carries a very low risk of pregnancy. Sperm must typically be deposited in the vagina for conception to occur, and while there is a theoretical risk of pregnancy from pre-ejaculate fluid (which may contain sperm), the likelihood is significantly reduced in your case. Since your girlfriend had her period on February 9 and did not engage in penetrative intercourse, it is less likely that she is pregnant. However, it is important to note that no contraceptive method is 100% effective, and if there is any doubt, taking a pregnancy test would be a prudent step.

Now, regarding the absence of menstruation, there are several factors that could contribute to this situation. One common reason for missed periods, especially in active individuals, is changes in physical activity or exercise levels. Increased exercise can lead to a condition known as exercise-induced amenorrhea, where the body’s energy expenditure exceeds its energy intake, leading to hormonal changes that can disrupt the menstrual cycle. This is particularly common in athletes or those who have recently increased their training intensity.

Additionally, stress and lifestyle changes can also impact menstrual regularity. Factors such as academic pressures, changes in diet, sleep patterns, or emotional stress can all contribute to hormonal fluctuations that may delay or even stop menstruation. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in athletes, can also play a role in menstrual irregularities. If your girlfriend has altered her diet significantly or is not consuming enough calories to support her increased activity level, this could be a contributing factor.

It is also worth considering other medical conditions that can lead to missed periods, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances. If your girlfriend continues to experience a lack of menstruation, it would be advisable for her to consult with a healthcare provider. A doctor can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests to check hormone levels, and possibly imaging studies to rule out any underlying conditions.

In summary, while the risk of pregnancy in your situation seems low, the absence of menstruation for an extended period warrants further investigation. Encourage your girlfriend to take a pregnancy test for peace of mind, and if her period does not return soon, suggest that she seek medical advice to explore other potential causes for her missed periods. Regular communication and support during this time will be important for both of you.
