Visual problems
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask you a few questions:
1.
When I read text, if the two lines above and below are the same, I experience a brief sensation of blurriness for about a second, making it difficult to distinguish whether it is one line or two.
This only happens when the two lines have the same text; everything else appears normal, including when I look at railings.
I have seen a doctor and undergone tests such as visual field tests, fundus examination, and intraocular pressure checks.
Aside from floaters, no issues were found.
However, this phenomenon has persisted for a long time.
My prescription is approximately -5.00 and -3.50.
I am unsure what the cause might be.
2.
In my twenties, I consulted a doctor about my floaters, and he said it was nothing to worry about.
Two years ago, I felt that sometimes there were transparent objects moving across my vision, so I asked the doctor to check my retina, and there were no abnormalities.
Recently, I have noticed countless black and white dots rapidly flashing when I look at bright areas of the sky.
Has this become more severe?
3.
One rainy day, my vision suddenly blurred for a moment, but it returned to normal immediately and has not happened again.
Could you please explain what might have caused this?
I apologize for the trouble and thank you!

Hello,
1.
In this situation, it is more common to experience dry eyes or eye fatigue.
If symptoms improve with blinking or resting, they likely fall into this category.
Additionally, strabismus could also be a possibility.
2.
The symptoms of floaters can vary greatly; if there are changes, it is advisable to have a re-examination.
3.
This situation is less clear, and it is difficult to determine the cause based on the description provided.
Thank you for your inquiry, and feel free to discuss any further questions!

Understanding visual disturbances can be quite complex, especially when it comes to issues like transient visual phenomena, floaters, and other eye-related concerns. Let's break down your questions and provide some insights based on the information you've shared.
1. Visual Disturbance When Reading Similar Lines: The experience of seeing two lines of text as one, particularly when they are identical, can be attributed to a phenomenon known as "visual crowding." This occurs when the brain has difficulty processing similar visual stimuli that are close together, leading to a temporary confusion in perception. This is not uncommon, especially in individuals with refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness) or astigmatism, which you mentioned having. The fact that your comprehensive eye exams (including visual field tests, fundus examinations, and intraocular pressure checks) returned normal results is reassuring. It suggests that there are no underlying structural issues with your eyes. However, if this phenomenon persists or worsens, it may be worth discussing with your eye care provider, as they might consider additional assessments or adjustments to your prescription.
2. Increased Floaters and Flashing Lights: Floaters are often benign and can be a common occurrence, especially as we age. However, the sensation of seeing "transparent objects" or "black and white light spots" can be concerning. These symptoms may indicate changes in the vitreous gel of the eye, which can sometimes lead to more serious conditions like retinal tears or detachments. The fact that you have previously had your retina examined without any abnormalities is a good sign, but the increase in symptoms warrants further evaluation. If you notice a significant increase in floaters or flashes, or if you experience any sudden changes in vision, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention, as these can be signs of retinal issues.
3. Transient Vision Loss: The sudden "misting" of your vision during a rainy day that resolved quickly could be attributed to several factors. It might be related to temporary changes in lighting conditions, such as glare from rain or reflections, which can affect how your eyes perceive contrast and clarity. Another possibility is a brief episode of visual migraine, which can cause temporary visual disturbances without any lasting effects. If this happens again or if you experience other symptoms like headaches or visual field loss, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any neurological issues.
In summary, while many of the symptoms you describe can be benign and related to common visual disturbances, it is essential to remain vigilant. Regular eye examinations and open communication with your eye care provider are key to monitoring any changes in your vision. If you have any concerns, especially regarding new or worsening symptoms, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation. Your eye health is paramount, and understanding the nuances of your symptoms can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
