Medication
Hello, I previously asked you about the use of Risperdal.
During my medical visit, the doctor explained that my previous abstract thinking, such as understanding that movies and novels are fictional, was difficult for me to grasp.
I couldn't comprehend concepts like "100." This was attributed to my obsessive-compulsive disorder.
However, after taking the medication at night, I felt extremely fatigued the next day, very tired, dizzy, and lethargic, not wanting to move.
I ended up sleeping for a whole day, and now, after a day and a half, I still feel the same.
Since there is still a long time until my next appointment, I would like to ask if I should continue taking the medication.
Could such severe side effects indicate potential harm to my brain? Additionally, regarding cognitive decline caused by mental illness, will recovery occur after the mental illness improves? Is medication absolutely necessary? (I am concerned about permanent damage due to brain cell death, as I understand that neurons do not regenerate.) Thank you for your guidance.

1.
If you experience any discomfort after taking the medication as described, you should return for a follow-up appointment as soon as possible to have your doctor adjust the medication, and you do not need to wait until your next scheduled appointment.
2.
The side effects of Risperdal that you described do not cause brain damage, so you can rest assured.
3.
The degenerative effects caused by mental illness can be partially restored through rehabilitation to some extent.
The degree of recovery is also related to the condition and individual physical factors.
Following the specialist's instructions for medication usually helps to slow down degeneration and enhance rehabilitation outcomes.

More Info
Risperdal (risperidone) is an atypical antipsychotic medication commonly prescribed for various mental health conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. It works by altering the effects of neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly serotonin and dopamine. While it can be effective in managing symptoms of OCD, it is not without side effects, which can sometimes be significant.
From your description, it seems you are experiencing notable fatigue, dizziness, and a lack of motivation after taking Risperdal. These side effects are not uncommon with this medication, especially when starting treatment or adjusting dosages. Sedation and lethargy can occur as the body adjusts to the medication. However, if these symptoms are severe and impacting your daily life, it is essential to discuss them with your prescribing physician. They may consider adjusting your dosage or switching you to a different medication that may have a more tolerable side effect profile for you.
Regarding your concerns about potential brain damage or cognitive decline due to your mental health condition and the use of Risperdal, it is important to understand that while chronic mental health issues can affect cognitive function, the brain has a remarkable ability to adapt and recover. Many individuals experience improvements in cognitive function once their mental health condition is effectively managed. This recovery can be aided by medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and social engagement.
It is also crucial to recognize that the use of medication is often necessary for managing symptoms effectively, especially in cases of severe OCD or other mental health disorders. While some individuals may find relief through therapy alone, many benefit significantly from a combination of medication and psychotherapy. The decision to continue medication should be made collaboratively with your healthcare provider, considering the benefits and risks involved.
If you are concerned about the long-term effects of Risperdal on your brain health, it is worth noting that there is no evidence to suggest that the medication causes permanent brain damage. However, like any medication, it should be used judiciously and under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Regular follow-ups with your doctor can help monitor your progress and any side effects you may be experiencing.
In summary, while Risperdal can be effective for managing OCD symptoms, it is essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any side effects you are experiencing. They can help determine the best course of action, which may include adjusting your medication or exploring alternative treatment options. Additionally, while mental health conditions can impact cognitive function, recovery is possible, and many individuals see improvements with appropriate treatment. Always prioritize your health and well-being by seeking guidance from your medical team.
