Unilateral labial hypertrophy?

Hello, doctor.
I do not smoke or drink, and I maintain a regular lifestyle.
I only had a few sexual experiences many years ago.
Around May of last year, I noticed that my right labium minora began to enlarge and sag, exceeding its original size by about 0.5-1 cm.
I am unsure if there have been fluctuations in size during this period, but if there were, the changes should be minimal.
There is no pain or itching, and I have not observed any other abnormalities.

Could you please explain why the right labium minora suddenly enlarged and has not diminished over the past year? Could it be related to my mild habit of masturbation? However, even after stopping this habit, there seems to be no reduction in size.
Is this a sign of a sexually transmitted infection? Will it be transmissible to my sexual partners in the future? What can I do to reduce its size? Thank you!
Other health issues I have experienced during the same period include:
1.
Athlete's foot and eczema on my feet, which I have had for ten years and have not completely resolved, with intermittent flare-ups.
2.
In March of last year, I experienced an acute allergic reaction (suspected to be food-related), resulting in large areas of redness and swelling all over my body (my back, waist, neck, and thighs looked like they had been bitten by mosquitoes).
I used topical and systemic medications prescribed by a dermatologist (the topical medication contained steroids), and it took about a month to return to normal.
3.
In May of last year, I developed serous retinal detachment in my right eye, diagnosed as central serous retinopathy.
I started taking diuretics, and after a year of treatment, the retinal detachment finally resolved, and I was able to stop the medication.

Hello: It is possible for the size of the labia to differ on each side, but to determine if there are any pathological changes in your case, it is advisable to visit a hospital for evaluation.
I recommend consulting a gynecologist.
Thank you!

Unilateral labial swelling, particularly in the context you described, can be concerning, especially when it persists for an extended period without any accompanying symptoms such as pain, itching, or discharge. There are several potential causes for the swelling of the right labium, and understanding these can help alleviate your concerns.

Possible Causes of Unilateral Labial Swelling
1. Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormone levels can lead to changes in the size and shape of the labia. This is particularly common during menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or hormonal therapy. However, since you mentioned that this change has persisted for a year, hormonal changes may not be the primary cause.

2. Lymphatic or Vascular Issues: Swelling can occur due to lymphatic obstruction or vascular issues, leading to localized edema. This might not be painful and could fluctuate in size based on various factors, including activity levels or fluid retention.

3. Infections or Inflammatory Conditions: While you indicated that there are no symptoms of infection (such as pain or itching), it’s still possible that a mild infection or inflammatory condition could cause localized swelling. Conditions like Bartholin's cysts or other benign growths can also lead to unilateral swelling.

4. Trauma or Irritation: Previous trauma or irritation to the area, even if minor, could lead to localized swelling. This could be due to friction from clothing, sexual activity, or even vigorous personal hygiene practices.

5. Benign Growths: Conditions such as lipomas or other benign tumors can cause swelling. These growths are generally harmless and do not require treatment unless they cause discomfort or cosmetic concerns.

6. Skin Conditions: Given your history of eczema and athlete's foot, it’s possible that a skin condition could be contributing to the swelling. Skin conditions can sometimes manifest in localized swelling without typical symptoms.

Concerns About STIs
You expressed concern about whether this could be a sexually transmitted infection (STI). While some STIs can cause swelling, they typically present with additional symptoms such as discharge, pain, or itching. Since you have not experienced these symptoms, it is less likely that an STI is the cause. However, if you have had unprotected sexual encounters, it may be prudent to get tested for STIs for peace of mind.

Impact on Sexual Partners
If the swelling is due to a benign condition or hormonal changes, it is unlikely to be contagious or pose a risk to sexual partners. However, if an infection were present, there could be a risk of transmission. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can help clarify this.

Management and Treatment Options
1. Observation: If the swelling is not causing discomfort or other symptoms, it may be reasonable to monitor the situation. Changes in size or symptoms should be noted.

2. Consultation with a Specialist: If the swelling persists or if you develop new symptoms, it would be advisable to consult a gynecologist or dermatologist. They can perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies to determine the cause of the swelling.

3. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that irritation from clothing or personal hygiene products may be contributing to the swelling, consider switching to more breathable fabrics and gentle, unscented products.

4. Skin Care: Given your history of skin conditions, maintaining good skin care practices and managing any existing conditions may help reduce inflammation and swelling.

5. Lifestyle Modifications: If you have concerns about your masturbation habits, it may be worth discussing these with a healthcare provider. However, it is unlikely that this is the direct cause of the swelling.

In conclusion, while unilateral labial swelling can be concerning, many benign causes exist. Monitoring the situation and consulting with a healthcare provider if symptoms change or persist is the best course of action. Regular gynecological check-ups can also help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
