Is it stomach pain, abdominal pain, or something else...?

Hello, I would like to ask about occasional pain on either side of the navel, and sometimes in the upper part of the abdomen.
What could be the cause of this? Sometimes the pain is around the navel as well.
Thank you.

Xiao Ju, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/06/16

Dr. Li Zhiyao reply Internal Medicine

Hello, Xiao Ju: Based on the symptoms you described, they seem to lean towards gastrointestinal issues, which can have many causes, such as irregular bowel movements, abnormal diet, or other conditions like peptic ulcers, among others.
If you are female, gynecological issues should also be considered.
Since you are not yet of legal age, it is advisable to inform your parents and have them accompany you to a gastroenterologist.
If you are studying away from home, you should also inform your teacher and ask for assistance in seeking medical care.
Wishing you good health!

Abdominal pain, particularly around the belly button, can arise from a variety of causes, and understanding these can help in determining the seriousness of the condition. The area around the belly button, or umbilicus, is innervated by several nerves and is associated with various organs, making it a common site for pain due to different underlying issues.

1. Gastrointestinal Causes: One of the most common reasons for pain around the belly button is related to gastrointestinal issues. Conditions such as gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines), constipation, or even irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can lead to cramping or sharp pain in this area. If the pain is accompanied by changes in bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation, it may indicate a gastrointestinal issue.

2. Appendicitis: Although appendicitis typically presents with pain in the lower right abdomen, it can sometimes start around the belly button before localizing. If the pain is severe and accompanied by fever, nausea, or vomiting, it is crucial to seek medical attention immediately, as appendicitis can become a surgical emergency.

3. Hernias: An umbilical hernia occurs when tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles near the belly button. This can cause localized pain, especially when straining or lifting. If you notice a bulge along with the pain, it may indicate a hernia.

4. Urinary Tract Issues: Conditions affecting the urinary tract, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or kidney stones, can also cause referred pain around the belly button. Symptoms may include painful urination, increased frequency of urination, or blood in the urine.

5. Gynecological Issues: In females, pain around the belly button can sometimes be related to gynecological conditions such as ovarian cysts or endometriosis. These conditions can cause referred pain to the abdominal area, including around the umbilicus.

6. Musculoskeletal Pain: Sometimes, pain around the belly button can be due to muscle strain or injury. Activities that involve heavy lifting or sudden movements can lead to muscle soreness or spasms in the abdominal area.

7. Nerve Pain: As mentioned in previous responses, nerve-related pain can also manifest in this region. Conditions like neuralgia or referred pain from other areas can lead to discomfort around the belly button.

8. Psychological Factors: Anxiety and stress can also manifest as physical symptoms, including abdominal pain. If you are experiencing significant anxiety, it may contribute to your perception of pain.

Given the variety of potential causes, it is essential to monitor the pain's characteristics. Consider factors such as the intensity, duration, and any accompanying symptoms (like fever, changes in bowel habits, or urinary symptoms). If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by concerning symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare provider may recommend imaging studies, blood tests, or other diagnostic procedures to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.

In summary, while occasional pain around the belly button can be benign, persistent or severe pain warrants further investigation to rule out serious conditions. Always prioritize your health and consult a healthcare professional if you have concerns about your symptoms.
