Sudden movements can cause palpitations?
Hello doctor, I have noticed that for the past four to five years, I occasionally experience palpitations, where my heart suddenly beats very fast and forcefully due to sudden movements.
I also feel chest tightness, nausea, and a sensation of not being able to breathe.
However, these episodes are infrequent, and when I went to a large hospital, they said I needed to have an electrocardiogram (ECG) during an episode.
The palpitations do not last long, making it difficult to reach the hospital in time for an examination.
Over the past couple of years, the episodes have become more severe, occurring more frequently and lasting longer; once, my heart raced all night.
I went to the emergency department for an ECG, which confirmed that my heart rhythm was abnormal.
They only let me lie there until my heart rate returned to normal, but ultimately, nothing was resolved.
What can be done to determine the underlying cause? How can I prevent these episodes? Thank you, doctor.

Hello, if you have the possibility of arrhythmia, it is recommended to visit a cardiologist for a 24-hour Holter ECG monitoring to determine the issue.
Only then can we discuss the causes, subsequent management, and prevention.

More Info
Palpitations, or the sensation of feeling your heart racing or pounding, can be a distressing experience. They can occur due to a variety of reasons, ranging from benign to more serious underlying conditions. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and prevention strategies is crucial for managing this condition effectively.
Causes of Palpitations
1. Physiological Causes:
- Stress and Anxiety: Emotional stress or anxiety can trigger palpitations. The body's fight-or-flight response releases adrenaline, which can increase heart rate.
- Physical Activity: Sudden movements or vigorous exercise can lead to palpitations as the heart works harder to supply blood to the muscles.
- Stimulants: Caffeine, nicotine, and certain medications (like decongestants) can stimulate the heart and cause palpitations.
2. Medical Conditions:
- Arrhythmias: Abnormal heart rhythms can lead to palpitations. Conditions like atrial fibrillation or premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) are common examples.
- Hyperthyroidism: An overactive thyroid can increase metabolism and heart rate, leading to palpitations.
- Anemia: Low red blood cell counts can cause the heart to pump harder to deliver oxygen, resulting in palpitations.
- Heart Disease: Structural heart issues or coronary artery disease can manifest as palpitations.
3. Electrolyte Imbalances: Low levels of potassium, magnesium, or calcium can disrupt the electrical signals in the heart, leading to palpitations.
Symptoms Associated with Palpitations
Palpitations can be accompanied by various symptoms, including:
- Chest Discomfort: This may feel like pressure, tightness, or pain.
- Shortness of Breath: Difficulty breathing can occur, especially during episodes of rapid heart rate.
- Nausea: Some individuals may feel nauseated or lightheaded during palpitations.
- Dizziness or Fainting: In severe cases, palpitations can lead to dizziness or even fainting.
Diagnosis
To determine the cause of your palpitations, a healthcare provider may recommend several diagnostic tests:
- Electrocardiogram (ECG): This test records the electrical activity of the heart and can identify arrhythmias.
- Holter Monitor: A portable ECG device worn for 24-48 hours to capture heart activity during daily activities.
- Echocardiogram: An ultrasound of the heart to assess its structure and function.
- Blood Tests: To check for thyroid function, electrolyte levels, and other potential underlying issues.
Prevention Strategies
1. Lifestyle Modifications:
- Reduce Stimulants: Limit caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol intake.
- Manage Stress: Engage in relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises.
- Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can exacerbate palpitations, so ensure adequate fluid intake.
2. Regular Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity can improve cardiovascular health and reduce anxiety, which may help decrease the frequency of palpitations.
3. Dietary Considerations: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can support overall heart health. Ensure adequate intake of electrolytes like potassium and magnesium.
4. Medication Management: If palpitations are linked to a specific medical condition, working with a healthcare provider to manage that condition effectively is essential. This may include adjusting medications that could be contributing to the issue.
5. Monitoring Symptoms: Keeping a diary of palpitations, noting their frequency, duration, and any associated symptoms, can help healthcare providers identify patterns and triggers.
Conclusion
If you experience frequent or prolonged palpitations, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. While occasional palpitations can be benign, persistent or severe symptoms warrant further investigation to rule out any serious underlying conditions. By understanding the causes and implementing preventive strategies, you can manage your symptoms effectively and improve your overall well-being.
