Post-Myomectomy: Is Blood-Tinged Discharge Normal After Two Weeks? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Two weeks after uterine fibroid surgery, there is still blood-tinged clear discharge?

It has been exactly two weeks since my surgery (traditional surgery for multiple fibroids and adenomas, the largest being 10 centimeters).
In the past two to three days, I have suddenly experienced a lot of clear discharge with blood (both bright red and dark red).
Sometimes I feel sharp, needle-like pains in my abdomen.
Is this normal after surgery? Or could it be because my period is approaching (it usually comes around the 9th)? Thank you.

nvsheng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/06/29

This does not necessarily indicate any issues.
However, if there is excessive bleeding beyond the normal menstrual flow, or if there is acute abdominal pain accompanied by internal bleeding, it is important to see a doctor immediately.

More Info

After a myomectomy, it is not uncommon to experience some degree of vaginal discharge, including blood-tinged fluid, in the weeks following the surgery. However, the nature and amount of this discharge can vary significantly among individuals, depending on several factors, including the extent of the surgery, the healing process, and individual anatomy.

In your case, having undergone a traditional myomectomy to remove multiple fibroids, including one as large as 10 cm, it is possible that the blood-tinged discharge you are experiencing is related to the surgical site healing. The presence of both bright red and dark red blood in the discharge can indicate different stages of healing. Bright red blood often signifies fresh bleeding, while dark red blood may indicate older blood that is being expelled from the body.

Typically, after a myomectomy, patients may experience some bleeding or spotting for a few weeks as the body heals. This can be exacerbated by the menstrual cycle, especially if your period is due around the same time. The hormonal fluctuations leading up to menstruation can cause the uterus to contract, potentially leading to increased discharge or spotting.

The sharp, needle-like pains you describe in your abdomen could be related to the healing process as well. It is not unusual for patients to experience intermittent pain or discomfort as the tissues heal and nerves regenerate. However, if the pain becomes severe or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as heavy bleeding, fever, or significant swelling, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.

While some degree of blood-tinged discharge can be normal, it is crucial to monitor the situation closely. If the discharge increases significantly, changes in color or odor, or if you experience any new or worsening symptoms, you should contact your healthcare provider. They may want to perform a physical examination or an ultrasound to ensure that there are no complications, such as retained tissue or infection.

In summary, while some blood-tinged discharge can be expected after a myomectomy, especially as you approach your menstrual cycle, it is essential to remain vigilant about your symptoms. If you have any doubts or concerns about your recovery, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance. They can provide you with the best guidance based on your specific situation and medical history.
