Post-Surgery Concerns: Yellow Discharge from Wound After Three Days - Surgery

Three days post-surgery, there is yellow discharge from the wound?

Hello doctor, I underwent a fistula surgery on July 17, and the doctor also removed my hemorrhoids.
Today is the third day post-surgery.
I have been taking sitz baths four times a day for 20 minutes each.
Since yesterday, yellow discharge has been coming from the wound, and my husband has tried to clean it but couldn't remove it.
The discharge seems to be increasing, and the wound does not feel any better than the first two days.
Is this pus or new tissue formation?

Hello: In response to your question, it's difficult to make a judgment based solely on your description.
However, if you are properly taking sitz baths post-surgery, the wound typically should not become infected.
Patients often mistake wound drainage for pus and become quite anxious.
Generally, if there is no fever or severe pain, there should not be any issues.
If you are still concerned, it's best to return to the clinic for a physician's evaluation.

After undergoing surgery, it is not uncommon to experience some degree of discharge from the wound, especially in the days following the procedure. In your case, having had a fistula surgery along with hemorrhoid removal, the presence of yellow discharge three days post-surgery can be concerning but may not necessarily indicate a serious problem.

The yellow discharge you are observing is likely to be a combination of tissue fluid and possibly some necrotic tissue, which is common during the healing process. This fluid can be a sign of the body’s natural response to surgery, where the healing tissues produce exudate as they repair themselves. If the discharge is not foul-smelling, it is less likely to be an infection. However, if the discharge continues to increase in volume, changes in color, or begins to emit an unpleasant odor, these could be signs of infection, and you should seek medical attention promptly.

In terms of wound care, it is essential to maintain cleanliness and follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions. Regular sitz baths, as you are already doing, can help keep the area clean and promote healing. However, it is crucial to ensure that you are not overdoing it, as excessive moisture can sometimes lead to maceration of the skin around the wound, which may complicate healing.

Regarding your concerns about whether the discharge is pus or granulation tissue, it is important to note that granulation tissue is a normal part of the healing process. It appears as a pink or red tissue that forms over the wound as it heals. If the yellow discharge is accompanied by swelling, increased pain, or redness around the wound, these could be indicators of infection, and you should consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

As for your question about the wound not feeling better than the previous days, it is not unusual for patients to experience fluctuations in pain and discomfort during the healing process. The first few days post-surgery can often be the most painful, and as the swelling subsides, you may start to feel better. However, if you notice that the pain is worsening or not improving, it is advisable to reach out to your surgeon.

In summary, while some yellow discharge can be normal, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If you have any doubts or if the symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to contact your healthcare provider for a follow-up appointment. They can assess the wound and determine if any further intervention is necessary. Your health and recovery are paramount, and maintaining open communication with your medical team is crucial during this time.
