Lip issues
I accidentally scratched my upper lip with my nail, and it became swollen.
It has reduced a bit, but now there is a round bump in the middle of my upper lip.
It has been like this for a year and a half, and I have seen a dermatologist and applied medication, but it hasn't helped much.
Which specialty should I consult for this issue? Thank you.

It could be a scar.
You may want to consult a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon for evaluation.

When dealing with a persistent lip bump that has lasted for a year and a half, it is essential to approach the situation with a thorough understanding of potential underlying causes and treatment options. Given your description, it sounds like you may have developed a condition known as a lip or oral mucosal lesion, which could be due to a variety of factors including trauma, infection, or even a benign growth.
Firstly, it is important to consider the nature of the bump. If it is a firm, painless bump, it could be a fibroma or a mucous cyst, both of which are generally benign. However, if the bump is painful, changing in size, or associated with other symptoms such as bleeding or ulceration, it may warrant further investigation. Persistent lesions that do not resolve on their own after a reasonable period, especially those that have been present for over six months, should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
In your case, since you have already seen a dermatologist without significant improvement, it may be beneficial to seek a second opinion or consult a specialist who focuses on oral and maxillofacial conditions. An oral surgeon or an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist) could provide a more specialized evaluation of the bump on your lip. They may recommend imaging studies or a biopsy to determine the exact nature of the lesion, especially if there is any suspicion of a more serious condition.
In terms of treatment, the approach will depend on the diagnosis. If the bump is determined to be a benign lesion, options may include observation, surgical excision, or other interventions to alleviate any discomfort or cosmetic concerns. If there is an underlying infection or inflammatory condition, appropriate medical management would be necessary.
It is also worth noting that lifestyle factors, such as sun exposure, smoking, and oral hygiene, can impact the health of your lips and surrounding tissues. Ensuring proper hydration, using lip balm with SPF, and avoiding irritants can help maintain lip health and potentially prevent further issues.
In summary, given the persistence of your lip bump and the lack of improvement with previous treatments, I recommend seeking a consultation with an oral surgeon or an otolaryngologist. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and guide you towards the most appropriate treatment options. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so it is wise to address any concerns promptly.

Consulting Dermatology for Nipple, Areola, and Lip Issues
Should I see a dermatologist for issues related to the nipple and areola? How long should I observe the condition? Also, is it possible that my chapped lips (which have bled a few times) could be infected? Should I also consult a dermatologist for my lips?

You only need to see a doctor if there is a lesion. Chapped lips are not a symptom of warts; try applying lip balm more frequently first.[Read More] Consulting Dermatology for Nipple, Areola, and Lip Issues
