Is It Safe for Teens to Take Joint Supplements After Ankle Fractures? - Orthopedics

Is Jianbu Wan suitable for use during puberty?

After an ankle fracture (in mid-May), experiencing soreness during exercise is common.
What can be taken to improve this? (Easy-to-take pills) I've heard that Jianbu Pills can be used; is it safe to take during puberty? Will it affect growth in height? Thanks!

Memphis, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/09/25

Dr. Chen Yongxue reply Orthopedics

Ankle fractures, particularly those involving the joint surface, require careful reduction and stabilization.
Even with proper healing, approximately 40% of patients may still experience soreness when there is a sudden drop in atmospheric pressure or after prolonged weight-bearing activities.
In such cases, applying heat can be quite effective.
For those experiencing more severe soreness, temporary use of analgesics may be considered.
As for the use of Jianbu Wan, it falls under the category of traditional Chinese medicine, and I do not have personal experience with it, so I prefer not to comment further.
Thank you.

When it comes to joint supplements for teens recovering from ankle fractures, it's important to consider both safety and efficacy. Joint supplements, such as glucosamine and chondroitin, are often marketed to support joint health and alleviate pain. However, the scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness, especially in adolescents, is mixed.
First and foremost, it’s crucial to understand that during the teenage years, the body is still growing and developing. This includes the bones, joints, and overall musculoskeletal system. Therefore, any supplementation should be approached with caution. While many joint supplements are generally considered safe, they can interact with other medications or have side effects that may not be fully understood in younger populations.

Regarding the specific supplement you mentioned, "健步丸" (which translates to "Joint Health Pills" or similar), it is essential to check the ingredients and consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement. Some ingredients may be beneficial for joint health, while others may not be suitable for teenagers or could potentially interfere with growth and development.

In terms of the concern about affecting height, most joint supplements do not have a direct impact on growth. However, some supplements may contain ingredients that could affect hormonal balance or metabolism, which could indirectly influence growth. Therefore, it’s advisable to avoid any supplements that are not specifically designed for adolescents or that do not have clear safety profiles for this age group.

For managing post-fracture pain and discomfort, there are several strategies that can be employed:
1. Physical Therapy: Engaging in a structured physical therapy program can help improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the ankle. A physical therapist can provide tailored exercises that are safe and effective for recovery.

2. Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help reduce pain and inflammation. However, these should be used as directed and not exceed recommended dosages.

3. Dietary Considerations: A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is essential for bone health, especially during recovery from fractures. Foods such as dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods can support bone healing.

4. Hydration and Rest: Staying well-hydrated and allowing adequate rest is crucial for recovery. The body needs time to heal, and proper hydration supports overall health.

5. Gradual Return to Activity: While it may be tempting to return to sports or physical activities quickly, it’s important to follow a gradual approach to avoid re-injury. Listen to your body and consult with a healthcare provider before resuming high-impact activities.

In summary, while joint supplements may be safe for some teens, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially after an injury like an ankle fracture. Focus on a holistic approach to recovery that includes physical therapy, proper nutrition, and gradual return to activity. This will not only help alleviate pain but also support overall healing and development during these crucial years.
