Feeling Your Heartbeat: Is It a Cause for Concern? - Cardiology

You can feel your own heartbeat?

Hello Doctor, I would like to ask you a question.
Since I was in middle school, I have been able to feel my heartbeat from the moment I wake up, and I can feel it throughout the day, even while sleeping and dreaming.
My heartbeat feels very strong.
During my military service, I had an electrocardiogram (ECG) done, but I was not informed of any heart problems.
Aside from the strong heartbeat, I do not have any other discomfort.
Is this condition related to anything? Thank you!

Xiao Zheng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/09/29

Feeling your heartbeat throughout the day, including during sleep and dreams, can be a concerning experience for many individuals. However, it is essential to understand the context and potential underlying causes of this sensation.
Firstly, the perception of a strong heartbeat, also known as palpitations, can occur for various reasons. In your case, since you have been experiencing this sensation since middle school and have had a normal electrocardiogram (ECG) during your military physical examination, it is less likely that you have a significant underlying heart condition. Palpitations can be benign and often related to anxiety, stress, or heightened awareness of bodily sensations.

Several factors can contribute to the feeling of a pronounced heartbeat:
1. Anxiety and Stress: Emotional states such as anxiety can lead to increased awareness of your heartbeat. When you are anxious, your body releases stress hormones like adrenaline, which can increase your heart rate and make you more sensitive to your heartbeat.

2. Physical Activity: Engaging in physical activities or exercise can also lead to a heightened awareness of your heartbeat. If you are more active or have recently increased your physical activity, this could explain the sensation.

3. Caffeine and Stimulants: Consumption of caffeine or other stimulants can lead to palpitations. If you consume coffee, energy drinks, or other caffeinated products, consider reducing your intake to see if it alleviates the sensation.

4. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those experienced during puberty, menstruation, or other life stages, can also affect heart rate and awareness of heartbeats.

5. Sleep Quality: Poor sleep quality or sleep disorders can lead to increased awareness of your heartbeat. If you are not getting restful sleep, it may contribute to the sensation of a strong heartbeat upon waking.

6. Medical Conditions: While less likely given your normal ECG, certain medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism, anemia, or electrolyte imbalances can lead to palpitations. If you have any other symptoms or concerns, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.

Given that you do not report any other discomfort or symptoms, it is likely that your experience is benign. However, if you ever feel lightheaded, experience chest pain, or have other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while feeling your heartbeat can be disconcerting, especially if it is persistent, it is often not indicative of a serious health issue, particularly if you have had normal cardiac evaluations. Lifestyle modifications, such as managing stress, reducing caffeine intake, and ensuring adequate sleep, may help alleviate your symptoms. If your concerns persist or worsen, consider discussing them with a healthcare provider who can offer personalized advice and further assessment.
