Postoperative Issues After Hemorrhoid Surgery

I had a mixed hemorrhoid excision surgery on September 14, and today is September 30, which means it has been 16 days.
However, since September 23, I noticed a lump similar to a hemorrhoid (there was previously a crescent-shaped wound that has now healed) at the anal opening, about the size of a fingernail.
I started taking anti-inflammatory medication on September 26, but the lump has not decreased in size.
Could this be an external hemorrhoid? Will it go away? I'm very worried.
Thank you.

After hemorrhoid surgery, there may be remnants of external hemorrhoidal tissue that were not completely removed.
If this is the case, it will not disappear but will gradually shrink over time.
As long as there is no pain or bleeding, there is no need for further treatment.

After undergoing a hemorrhoidectomy, it is not uncommon for patients to experience various post-surgical concerns, including the development of lumps or swelling around the surgical site. In your case, you have noticed a lump near the anal area approximately 16 days post-surgery, which has raised concerns about whether this could be an external hemorrhoid or some other complication.

Firstly, it is essential to understand that after hemorrhoid surgery, the healing process can vary significantly from person to person. The presence of a lump could be due to several factors:
1. Swelling and Inflammation: After surgery, it is typical for the surgical site to be swollen as part of the healing process. This swelling can sometimes resemble a lump and may take several weeks to resolve.

2. Formation of a Hematoma: If there was significant bleeding during or after the surgery, a hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels) could form, leading to a lump. Hematomas can sometimes take time to reabsorb and may feel firm or tender.

3. Residual Tissue or Skin Tags: Sometimes, after the removal of hemorrhoids, residual tissue can remain, which may appear as a lump. Skin tags can also develop post-surgery, especially if there was significant stretching of the skin during the procedure.

4. External Hemorrhoids: If the lump is indeed an external hemorrhoid, it may not disappear immediately. External hemorrhoids can become thrombosed (filled with blood), leading to pain and swelling. They can take time to resolve, and in some cases, they may require further treatment.

Given that you have been taking anti-inflammatory medication since September 26 without noticeable improvement, it is advisable to consult your surgeon or a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination to determine the nature of the lump and assess whether it is a normal part of the healing process or if it requires additional intervention.

Recommendations for Management:
1. Follow-Up Appointment: Schedule a follow-up visit with your surgeon to discuss your concerns. They can provide a proper assessment and determine if any further treatment is necessary.

2. Pain Management: If you are experiencing discomfort, continue to use pain relief methods as recommended by your healthcare provider. Warm sitz baths can also help alleviate discomfort and promote healing.

3. Avoid Straining: Ensure that you are not straining during bowel movements, as this can exacerbate swelling and discomfort. A high-fiber diet and adequate hydration can help maintain regular bowel movements.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the lump for any changes in size, color, or associated symptoms such as increased pain, bleeding, or discharge. Report any concerning changes to your healthcare provider promptly.

5. Education: Educate yourself about the healing process after hemorrhoid surgery. Understanding what to expect can help alleviate anxiety and prepare you for potential complications.

In conclusion, while the presence of a lump after hemorrhoid surgery can be concerning, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. With proper care and monitoring, most post-surgical complications can be effectively managed, leading to a successful recovery.
