Is it necessary to have an erection in the morning?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask: 1.
Is it necessary to have an erection upon waking up in the morning to consider erectile function normal? 2.
If I notice that I haven't woken up with an erection for 2 to 3 consecutive days, I tend to think about things that could stimulate an erection or look at things that might arouse me.
Since I'm just trying to test whether my function is still normal, my sexual desire isn't very strong.
Recently, I also want to gradually reduce my DIY activities (aiming for about 3 times a month, compared to about 2 to 3 times a week previously).
Although I can maintain an erection for a certain period, it doesn't feel as firm as it used to.
If I do a kegel contraction, it becomes harder, but it also feels like I might ejaculate, even if I don't.
Is my function considered normal? Should I be concerned about not having morning erections for a few days and conduct tests, or is it better to just go with the flow and not overthink it? 3.
Is there a correlation between the duration of erections during DIY activities and actual sexual intercourse? (Since DIY is purely for release, I don't pay much attention to the duration; however, since I currently have no sexual experience, I assume that during intercourse, I can't just finish in 10 to 15 minutes like I do with DIY, right?)

Dr. Lin Hexing reply Urology
Hello: Do young people have no other activities to engage in? Based on your condition, if you can maintain normal activity for over one minute, that's fine; over two minutes is good, and reaching ten to fifteen minutes is quite impressive.
Don't aim to be a superhero; it typically takes more than half an hour.
Wishing you good health.

Morning erections, also known as nocturnal penile tumescence, are a normal physiological phenomenon that occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. They are a sign of healthy blood flow and nerve function in the penis, and they typically happen several times during the night, often unnoticed. However, the presence or absence of morning erections is not the sole indicator of overall sexual function or health.
1. Is Morning Erection Necessary for Normal Sexual Function?
While morning erections can be a sign of normal erectile function, their absence does not necessarily indicate a problem. Many factors can influence morning erections, including stress, fatigue, hormonal levels, and sleep quality. It is common for men to experience variations in their erectile function, and not having a morning erection for a few days does not automatically mean there is a dysfunction. If you are otherwise able to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual activity, this is a positive sign of sexual health.
2. Concerns About Absence of Morning Erections:
If you notice that you are not experiencing morning erections for a few consecutive days, it may be tempting to test your erectile function through various means. However, it is essential to approach this with a balanced mindset. Overthinking or stressing about erectile function can lead to performance anxiety, which may further impact your sexual health. It is generally advisable to allow your body to function naturally without excessive concern. If you find that the absence of morning erections persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, such as difficulty achieving erections during sexual activity, it may be worth consulting a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.
3. DIY Stimulation vs. Actual Sexual Experience:
The differences between DIY (do-it-yourself) stimulation and sexual intercourse can indeed affect the experience of erection and ejaculation. DIY stimulation often allows for a more controlled environment, where one can focus solely on pleasure without the complexities of a partner's involvement. In contrast, sexual intercourse involves emotional and physical dynamics that can influence arousal and performance. The duration of erections can vary significantly between the two experiences. Many men find that they may not last as long during intercourse as they do during solo activities, which is entirely normal.
In summary, while morning erections can be a sign of healthy sexual function, their absence for a few days is not necessarily a cause for concern. It is essential to maintain a relaxed attitude towards sexual health and to focus on overall well-being rather than fixating on specific indicators. If you have ongoing concerns about erectile function or sexual health, consider discussing them with a healthcare provider who can offer personalized advice and support.
