Fractional laser
Hello, doctor.
I previously had scar revision surgery on my face, and I would like to know if I should wait for the scars to turn white and mature before undergoing fractional laser treatment to make the scars smoother.
The scars are currently 7 months old, but there is still a slight redness in the area, and I am concerned that the treatment might irritate the wounds and cause them to become raised.
Thank you for your response!

Hello: If you have a tendency for hypertrophic scars or keloids, it is not recommended to undergo fractional laser treatment.
Thank you!

When considering the timing for fractional laser treatment after scar revision surgery, it is essential to understand the healing process of scars and the potential effects of laser therapy on them. Scars typically go through several stages of healing, which can last from several months to a year or more. Initially, scars may appear red or raised, and over time, they often become flatter and lighter in color.
In your case, since the scar is already seven months old and still shows some redness, it is crucial to assess whether the scar has matured sufficiently for laser treatment. Generally, it is advisable to wait until the scar has matured, which usually means it has become less red and more similar in color to the surrounding skin. This maturation process can take anywhere from six months to a year, depending on individual healing factors, the type of scar, and the location on the body.
Fractional laser therapy can be beneficial for improving the appearance of scars by promoting collagen remodeling and skin resurfacing. However, if the scar is still in an active healing phase, applying laser treatment may lead to irritation or exacerbate the redness and swelling. This could potentially result in a more prominent scar or even cause the scar to become hypertrophic or keloid, which is an overgrowth of scar tissue.
It is also important to consider the type of laser being used. Some lasers are more aggressive and can cause more inflammation, while others are gentler and may be more suitable for treating scars that are not fully matured. Consulting with a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon who specializes in laser treatments is crucial. They can evaluate your scar's current state and recommend the best course of action, whether that means waiting longer for the scar to mature or proceeding with treatment.
In summary, while fractional laser therapy can be an effective method for improving scar appearance, it is generally best to wait until the scar has matured to minimize the risk of adverse effects. Since your scar is still showing some redness after seven months, it may be wise to consult with a specialist who can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation. They can help determine if your scar is ready for treatment or if it would be better to wait a bit longer for optimal results.
