Hypothyroidism
Hello, I have just started treatment for hypothyroidism and have been taking medication for over two weeks.
My menstrual period has been delayed by more than a week this month.
Could the medication be causing the delay in my menstrual cycle?
Miyako, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2013/11/06
Dr. Zhou Jiazhen reply Breast and Thyroid
Dear Miyako,
Hello.
Medications that lower thyroid function can cause abnormalities in the pituitary gland, which may sometimes affect your menstrual cycle.
It is advisable to monitor the situation over time and then discuss the medication with your attending physician.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely,
Zhou Jiazhen

Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, can indeed have an impact on menstrual cycles. When you start treatment for hypothyroidism, typically with medications such as levothyroxine, it can take some time for your body to adjust to the new hormone levels. This adjustment period can sometimes lead to changes in your menstrual cycle, including delays.
The thyroid hormones play a crucial role in regulating various bodily functions, including the menstrual cycle. An underactive thyroid can lead to irregularities in menstruation, such as heavier or lighter periods, longer cycles, or missed periods altogether. When you begin treatment, your body is trying to reach a new equilibrium, and this can temporarily affect your menstrual cycle.
In your case, since you have been on medication for just over two weeks, it is possible that the delay in your menstrual cycle is related to the initiation of treatment. However, it is also important to consider other factors that can influence menstrual cycles, such as stress, changes in weight, exercise habits, and other underlying health conditions.
If your menstrual cycle does not normalize after a few months of consistent medication, or if you experience other concerning symptoms, it would be advisable to consult your healthcare provider. They may want to check your thyroid hormone levels to ensure that your dosage is appropriate and that your body is responding well to the treatment.
In summary, while it is possible that your hypothyroidism medication could be contributing to the delay in your menstrual cycle, it is also essential to consider other factors. Monitoring your cycle over the next few months and maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider will help ensure that any issues are addressed promptly. Remember, it can take time for your body to adjust to new medications, and patience is often required during this process.
