Does floaters cause astigmatism?
Hello, Doctor He.
I would like to ask you about my situation.
I underwent LASIK surgery for my myopia ten years ago, but I started experiencing floaters in my right eye two months ago and in my left eye one month ago.
Will floaters affect my vision? Why is my right eye becoming increasingly blurry? I have tried getting my vision checked at an optical store and found that both eyes have developed myopia and astigmatism.
However, the glasses I received never seem to meet my satisfaction, and the double vision in my right eye is still quite severe.
Recently, I have also experienced glare.
Is this normal?

Dr. He Jianxian reply Ophthalmology
Hello: Floaters are generally not related to the degree of myopia or astigmatism.
Since your prescription has changed and your corrected vision is unsatisfactory, it is recommended that you return to the facility where you had the laser surgery for further examination to check for any changes in your corneal condition.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Floaters, or "floaters," are small specks or strands that drift through your field of vision. They are typically caused by changes in the vitreous gel that fills the eye as we age. While floaters themselves are generally harmless, they can be bothersome and may affect your visual comfort, especially if they are numerous or particularly prominent.
In your case, having undergone LASIK surgery ten years ago, the emergence of floaters in both eyes could be coincidental and related to the natural aging process of the eye rather than a direct consequence of the LASIK procedure. However, it is essential to understand that floaters can sometimes be associated with more serious conditions, such as retinal tears or detachments, particularly if they are accompanied by flashes of light or a sudden increase in the number of floaters. Therefore, if you notice any sudden changes in your vision, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention.
Regarding your concerns about vision clarity and the development of astigmatism after LASIK, it is not uncommon for patients to experience changes in their vision over time. LASIK aims to correct refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism, but it does not prevent the natural aging of the eye or the development of new refractive errors. Factors such as changes in the cornea, lens, or overall eye health can lead to the re-emergence of myopia or the development of astigmatism years after the surgery.
The fact that you are experiencing increased blurriness in your right eye and have noted the presence of astigmatism during your recent eye exam suggests that your vision may have changed since your LASIK procedure. The presence of double vision (diplopia) and glare can also be associated with various factors, including corneal irregularities, dry eye syndrome, or even the development of cataracts, which can occur as we age.
It is essential to have a comprehensive eye examination with an ophthalmologist who can evaluate the health of your eyes and determine the underlying causes of your symptoms. They may perform tests to assess the shape of your cornea, the quality of your tear film, and the overall health of your retina. Depending on the findings, they may recommend treatments such as glasses or contact lenses to correct any new refractive errors, or they may discuss other options if there are concerns about the health of your eyes.
In summary, while floaters themselves do not typically cause astigmatism or significant vision loss, they can be a source of visual distraction. The changes in your vision, including the development of astigmatism and the presence of glare or double vision, warrant further investigation by an eye care professional. Regular eye exams are crucial, especially after refractive surgery, to monitor any changes in your vision and eye health over time.
