Is it related to heart murmurs?
Hello, doctor: I recently had an adult health check-up, and during the examination, the doctor detected a slight heart murmur while listening to my heart.
The doctor asked if I usually feel unwell, but I don't.
However, I didn't dare to tell the doctor that I sometimes experience chest pain or shortness of breath after sexual activity.
I just want to ask if this is related to the heart murmur.
The pain usually lasts for a short time.
I would like to get your opinion on this.

Dr. Lin Wenbin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Having sexual intercourse is similar to exercising.
You need to consult a cardiologist for a detailed examination.

Heart murmurs are sounds made by turbulent blood flow within the heart, which can be detected during a physical examination. They can be classified as either innocent (or functional) murmurs, which are not associated with any heart problems, or abnormal murmurs, which may indicate underlying heart conditions such as valve issues or congenital heart defects.
In your case, you mentioned experiencing chest pain or shortness of breath after intimacy, which raises some important considerations. While a heart murmur itself may not directly cause these symptoms, it could be indicative of an underlying heart condition that might be exacerbated by physical exertion, including sexual activity.
During intimacy, the body undergoes various physiological changes, including increased heart rate and blood pressure, which can place additional stress on the cardiovascular system. If there is an underlying heart condition, such as valvular heart disease or other structural abnormalities, this increased demand on the heart could potentially lead to symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath.
It is essential to differentiate between the types of murmurs. Innocent murmurs are common, especially in younger individuals, and typically do not cause any symptoms or complications. However, if your murmur is classified as abnormal, it may warrant further investigation. Symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, particularly if they occur during or after physical exertion, should not be ignored.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to discuss them openly with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further diagnostic tests, such as an echocardiogram, to assess the structure and function of your heart more thoroughly. This imaging study can help determine if there are any significant issues related to the heart murmur that could be contributing to your symptoms.
Additionally, it is important to consider other potential causes of chest pain and shortness of breath, such as anxiety, gastrointestinal issues (like acid reflux), or musculoskeletal pain, especially if the symptoms are transient and resolve quickly. However, given your history of a heart murmur and the nature of your symptoms, a thorough evaluation by a cardiologist would be prudent.
In summary, while a heart murmur itself may not directly cause chest pain after intimacy, it could be a sign of an underlying condition that may be exacerbated by physical activity. It is crucial to communicate your symptoms with your healthcare provider to ensure appropriate evaluation and management. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing these concerns can help you achieve peace of mind and better overall health.
