Pregnancy discharge

Hello, doctor.
I am currently 35 weeks pregnant, and I have been experiencing a lot of discharge.
Sometimes it is watery, and other times it is milky white.
In the past two days, I have occasionally noticed yellow-green discharge, but there is no odor.
Does this indicate an infection? Will it affect the fetus, and do I need treatment with suppositories? Thank you.

Landy, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2014/04/07

Dr. Dong Yuhong reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello: During pregnancy, vaginal discharge may increase.
If there are no discomforts, there is no need to worry excessively.
You may also ask your obstetrician to perform a vaginal examination to determine if medication is necessary.
It is advisable to communicate frequently with your obstetrician regarding any pregnancy-related concerns.
Thank you!

During pregnancy, it is common for women to experience various types of vaginal discharge due to hormonal changes and the body's preparation for childbirth. However, understanding when this discharge may indicate an infection is crucial for the health of both the mother and the fetus.

In your case, at 35 weeks pregnant, experiencing increased vaginal discharge can be normal. The discharge can vary in color and consistency; it may be clear, white, or even slightly yellowish. However, the presence of yellow-green discharge can sometimes be a cause for concern, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, burning, or a strong odor. These symptoms may indicate a possible infection, such as bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection, which are relatively common during pregnancy.

1. Normal Discharge vs. Infection: Normal pregnancy discharge, known as leukorrhea, is typically thin, clear, or milky white and does not have a strong odor. If the discharge changes to a yellow-green color and is accompanied by an unusual smell or other symptoms, it may suggest an infection. It is important to monitor any changes in your discharge and report them to your healthcare provider.

2. Potential Impact on the Fetus: Most common infections during pregnancy, such as yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis, are not likely to harm the fetus if treated appropriately. However, untreated infections can lead to complications, including preterm labor or low birth weight. Therefore, it is essential to address any concerns with your healthcare provider promptly.

3. When to Seek Treatment: If you notice a significant change in your discharge, especially if it becomes yellow-green and is accompanied by other symptoms, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider. They may perform an examination and possibly recommend a vaginal swab to determine if an infection is present. Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include topical or oral medications that are safe for use during pregnancy.

4. Self-Care Measures: While waiting for your appointment, you can take some self-care measures to maintain vaginal health. This includes wearing breathable cotton underwear, avoiding douching or using scented products in the genital area, and practicing good hygiene. Staying hydrated and eating a balanced diet can also support your immune system.

5. Importance of Regular Check-ups: Regular prenatal visits are crucial for monitoring both your health and your baby's development. During these visits, discuss any concerns about discharge or other symptoms with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice and reassurance based on your specific situation.

In summary, while increased discharge can be a normal part of pregnancy, changes in color and consistency warrant attention. If you are experiencing yellow-green discharge without odor or other symptoms, it may still be benign, but it is best to consult your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. Early detection and treatment of any potential infections can help ensure a healthy pregnancy and delivery.
