Is it menstruation or vaginal bleeding?

On April 11, my menstrual period started, but this time it was unusual.
Unlike before, the blood only came out when I urinated.
On the first day, I drank longan and red date tea and used a heating pad, which helped to release a larger amount of blood.
However, for the next three days, I only had a small amount of menstrual flow, and it only came out when I urinated.
Additionally, I have been experiencing discomfort in the vaginal area, feeling like something is trapped there.
Now on the sixth day, the menstrual flow is still minimal, but the discomfort in the vagina has decreased (it only occurs after showering).
I'm unsure if this is just my period or if there is an issue with vaginal bleeding.
I'm worried that I might not be expelling all the menstrual blood or that there could be an infection.

When it comes to distinguishing between menstruation and abnormal vaginal bleeding, it’s essential to consider various factors, including the characteristics of the bleeding, accompanying symptoms, and any recent changes in your health or lifestyle. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a menstrual cycle that is behaving unusually, which can understandably cause concern.

Firstly, it’s important to clarify what constitutes normal menstruation. A typical menstrual cycle lasts between 21 to 35 days, with bleeding lasting from 2 to 7 days. The flow can vary significantly from person to person and even from cycle to cycle. However, if you notice that your menstrual blood is only being expelled during urination, this could indicate a few possibilities.

One potential explanation for your symptoms is that you may be experiencing a condition known as "retained menstrual blood." This occurs when menstrual blood accumulates in the uterus and is not expelled effectively, leading to discomfort and unusual patterns of bleeding. This can happen due to various reasons, including hormonal imbalances, structural abnormalities in the uterus (such as fibroids or polyps), or even infections.

Another possibility is that you are experiencing a form of abnormal vaginal bleeding unrelated to your menstrual cycle. This could be due to several factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, changes in physical activity, or even the use of certain medications. If the bleeding is accompanied by discomfort, it may suggest an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

Given that you mentioned feeling discomfort in the vaginal area, it’s crucial to consider the possibility of an infection or inflammation. Conditions such as vaginitis, cervicitis, or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) can cause abnormal bleeding and discomfort. These conditions often require medical evaluation and treatment, so it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider if you suspect an infection.

Additionally, if you have recently experienced significant lifestyle changes, such as stress from school or work, this could also impact your menstrual cycle. Stress can lead to hormonal changes that may affect ovulation and menstruation, resulting in irregular bleeding patterns.

In your case, since you have already experienced discomfort and unusual bleeding for several days, it would be prudent to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or blood tests to assess hormone levels. They can help determine whether your symptoms are due to a normal variation in your menstrual cycle or if there is an underlying condition that requires treatment.

In summary, while it’s possible that what you are experiencing is a variation of your menstrual cycle, the combination of prolonged discomfort and unusual bleeding patterns warrants further investigation. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with the clarity and reassurance you need, as well as appropriate treatment options if necessary. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
