Penile care and white spots?

Hello Doctor, I would like to ask a few questions:
1.
I want to take care of my penis, so after showering, I apply petroleum jelly on the entire penis, glans, and scrotum.
Is this harmful to my penis?
2.
I have small white spots at the base of my penis that feel smooth and are slightly raised, but I’m not sure.
They are painless and have been there for a while.
Is this a skin condition?
3.
When I was in high school, I experienced swelling and pain after masturbation, but I no longer have this issue since college.
Why did this change?
Thank you, Doctor :)

When it comes to penis care, addressing concerns such as white spots, skin conditions, and general hygiene practices is essential for maintaining sexual health. Let's break down your questions one by one.

1. Use of Vaseline for Penis Care: Applying Vaseline (petroleum jelly) to the penis, glans (head), and scrotum after bathing can have both positive and negative effects. On the positive side, Vaseline can provide a moisture barrier, which may help prevent dryness and irritation. However, it is important to note that petroleum jelly is occlusive, meaning it can trap moisture and bacteria, potentially leading to infections or skin irritations. For optimal hygiene, it is generally recommended to use a water-based or silicone-based lubricant specifically designed for genital use, as these products are less likely to cause irritation or infection. Additionally, maintaining cleanliness through regular washing with mild soap and water is crucial.

2. White Spots on the Penis: The presence of white spots at the base of the penis that are smooth and slightly raised could be a variety of things. One common benign condition is pearly penile papules, which are small, harmless bumps that typically appear around the corona of the glans. They are normal anatomical variations and do not require treatment. However, if the spots change in appearance, become painful, or are accompanied by other symptoms (such as discharge or itching), it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis. Other potential causes could include Fordyce spots (small, painless, pale bumps), or in some cases, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or skin conditions. A healthcare provider can perform an examination and provide clarity.

3. Pain After Masturbation in High School: Experiencing pain or discomfort after masturbation during adolescence is not uncommon. This could be attributed to several factors, including technique, frequency, or even anxiety related to sexual activity. As individuals mature, their bodies often adapt, and the pain may subside as they become more familiar with their bodies and develop healthier sexual practices. If pain persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, it is important to seek medical advice to rule out any underlying issues.

In summary, maintaining proper hygiene and being aware of any changes in your genital area is crucial for sexual health. If you have concerns about specific symptoms, such as the white spots or any discomfort, it is always best to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide a thorough examination and appropriate guidance tailored to your individual needs. Remember, open communication with a healthcare provider is key to addressing any health concerns effectively.

It is recommended to consult a urologist for an online consultation; however, this cannot replace an in-person examination and physical assessment by a physician. If there is a medical condition, it is still advised to seek care at a healthcare facility.
