Persistent phlegm?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask about having phlegm since childhood.
I haven't seen a doctor because I don't have a cough or any pain.
The phlegm is colorless, but it changes color based on what I eat; for example, it turns black after eating chocolate and milky white after consuming milk.
I am unsure what the reason for this is.
Should I see a doctor? Thank you.

Dr. Zhou Ziguang reply Pulmonology
Hello, there are many reasons for phlegm in the throat, with common causes including post-nasal drip.
It is recommended to visit a pulmonology and otolaryngology outpatient clinic for an examination and discussion with a physician.
Thank you, Dr.

More Info
Persistent phlegm can be a concerning symptom, especially when it has been present for a long time. While it is good that you do not experience pain or coughing, the presence of phlegm can indicate underlying issues that may require medical attention.
Phlegm is a type of mucus produced by the respiratory system. It serves as a protective barrier, trapping dust, allergens, and pathogens, and is typically cleared from the airways through coughing. The fact that your phlegm changes color based on what you eat is interesting and may suggest that your body is reacting to the substances you consume. For instance, the color change to black after eating chocolate or white after consuming milk could be due to the pigments or components in those foods being mixed with the mucus.
However, persistent phlegm, even if it is clear or changes color, can be associated with several conditions. Chronic bronchitis, allergies, or even gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can lead to increased mucus production. In some cases, it may also indicate an infection or inflammation in the respiratory tract.
Given that you have had this symptom since childhood, it is essential to consider whether there have been any changes in your health or lifestyle that might have contributed to this condition. For example, exposure to allergens, smoking, or living in a polluted environment can exacerbate mucus production.
While the absence of pain or coughing might seem reassuring, it is still advisable to consult a healthcare professional. A doctor can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, a review of your medical history, and possibly imaging studies or pulmonary function tests. These assessments can help determine if there is an underlying condition that needs to be addressed.
In summary, while your symptoms may not seem alarming at first glance, persistent phlegm should not be ignored. It is always better to err on the side of caution and seek medical advice, especially if the symptom has been present for a long time. A healthcare provider can help you understand the cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment options if necessary.
