A single red lesion on the glans penis?

Hello, Doctor.
Thank you for your hard work.
I have the following symptoms: Recently, on the right side of the area where the glans connects to the foreskin, just below the glans, there is a small red spot that was initially not very noticeable.
After about two weeks, I noticed it had become raised, the area has enlarged, and it appears bright red with an irregular shape (it looks like an L shape), but it is neither painful nor itchy.
Two months ago, I had sexual intercourse and subsequently developed balanitis, which was cured about a month ago.
Since then, I have not had sexual intercourse, and this new red spot looks different from the previous balanitis.
Could you please advise what this condition might be? Thank you.

The presence of a red bump on the glans, particularly in the area where the glans connects with the foreskin, can be concerning and may indicate several potential conditions. Given your description of the bump being bright red, irregularly shaped, and not painful or itchy, there are a few possibilities to consider.

1. Irritation or Inflammation: After experiencing balanitis (inflammation of the glans) previously, it is possible that the area is still sensitive or has not completely healed. Irritation from friction, hygiene products, or even residual inflammation can lead to the development of a red bump.

2. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, benign bumps that can appear on the glans or corona of the penis. They are usually painless and do not require treatment. However, they can sometimes be confused with other conditions, so it’s important to differentiate them.

3. Fordyce Spots: These are small, painless, pale bumps that are actually sebaceous glands that are visible through the skin. They are completely normal and do not require treatment.

4. Genital Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), genital warts can appear as small, flesh-colored or red bumps. They can be irregular in shape and may not be painful. If you have had unprotected sexual contact, this is a possibility that should be considered.

5. Candidiasis (Yeast Infection): This can occur in males, especially if there is a history of balanitis. It can cause red, inflamed areas on the glans and may present with a bump.

6. Other Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as psoriasis or eczema can also manifest as red bumps on the genital area. These conditions may require specific treatments.

7. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): While you mentioned that there has been no sexual activity since the previous infection, it is still important to consider STIs as a potential cause, especially if there was any unprotected contact.

Given that the bump has changed in size and appearance over the past few weeks, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests, such as a swab or biopsy, to determine the exact nature of the bump.
In the meantime, it is essential to maintain good hygiene and avoid any irritants, such as scented soaps or lotions, in the genital area. Avoiding sexual activity until you have a clearer understanding of the bump is also prudent to prevent any potential transmission of infections.

In conclusion, while there are several benign explanations for the red bump on the glans, it is crucial to have it evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate treatment if necessary.
