Is it possible for true myopia or amblyopia to decrease in severity?
If I stop using the computer and phone so much and massage around my eyes while looking into the distance, can I reduce my myopia, which is currently around -300, and astigmatism, which is -100, to -100 over time? Besides the possibility of pseudomyopia, it seems that I have amblyopia in one eye because my prescription always varies slightly between the two eyes, and I cannot achieve complete clarity.

Dr. Zhuang Yamin reply Ophthalmology
Hello: First, the definition of amblyopia in adults should be that visual acuity remains below normal values even after wearing appropriate corrective lenses, and there are no other optic nerve or retinal diseases.
Therefore, if the accuracy of the prescription is uncertain or if the condition of the various parts of the eye is unknown, a discussion cannot proceed.
Regarding the prescription, a myopia of -3.00 diopters, even with enhanced vision care, is unlikely to be reduced to -1.00 diopters.
If you still feel that there is a significant difference in visual acuity between your two eyes, it is recommended that you take the time to undergo an examination and evaluation by an ophthalmologist.
Best wishes for your health.

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, and amblyopia, often referred to as "lazy eye," are two distinct visual conditions that can significantly affect one's quality of life. Your question about whether reducing screen time and engaging in eye relaxation techniques can improve these conditions is quite relevant, especially in today's digital age where screen exposure is ubiquitous.
Firstly, it’s important to understand the nature of myopia. Myopia occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea has too much curvature, causing light rays to focus in front of the retina rather than directly on it. This results in distant objects appearing blurry while close objects can be seen clearly. Amblyopia, on the other hand, is a developmental disorder where one eye fails to achieve normal visual acuity, often due to a lack of proper visual stimulation during critical developmental periods in childhood.
Reducing screen time can indeed help alleviate some symptoms associated with eye strain, which is commonly experienced by individuals who spend prolonged periods looking at screens. This condition, often referred to as digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome, can lead to discomfort, fatigue, and temporary blurriness. By taking regular breaks and practicing the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds), you can help reduce eye fatigue.
However, while reducing screen time may help alleviate symptoms of eye strain, it is unlikely to significantly alter the underlying refractive error associated with myopia or improve amblyopia on its own. Myopia tends to stabilize in early adulthood, but it can progress in some individuals, especially if they have a genetic predisposition or engage in activities that require prolonged near vision.
As for amblyopia, treatment is most effective when initiated during childhood. The goal is to improve the visual acuity of the weaker eye, often through methods such as patching the stronger eye, vision therapy, or corrective lenses. If amblyopia is not treated early, it can lead to permanent visual impairment in the affected eye.
Regarding your specific situation, where you mention having a myopia of around -300 degrees and astigmatism of -100 degrees, along with concerns about potential amblyopia, it is crucial to consult with an eye care professional. They can provide a comprehensive eye examination to determine the best course of action. While some individuals may experience a slight reduction in myopia through lifestyle changes, such as increased outdoor activity and reduced screen time, significant changes in refractive error are less common without corrective lenses or surgical intervention.
In terms of your question about whether it is possible to reduce myopia to -100 degrees through these methods, it is essential to set realistic expectations. While some improvement in visual comfort and reduction in eye strain can be achieved, it is unlikely that significant refractive changes will occur without appropriate treatment.
In conclusion, while reducing screen time and practicing eye relaxation techniques can help manage symptoms of eye strain, they are not definitive treatments for myopia or amblyopia. A comprehensive approach that includes regular eye examinations, appropriate corrective lenses, and, if necessary, treatment for amblyopia is essential for optimal visual health. If you suspect you have amblyopia or if your vision continues to fluctuate, please seek professional advice from an eye care specialist who can guide you through the best options tailored to your needs.
