There are streaks of blood in the throat wall?

Hello, doctor.
This morning after brushing my teeth, I noticed blood streaks on my throat wall.
I cleared my throat and spat it out.
About half an hour later, I noticed blood streaks again.
Four months ago, I also had similar blood streaks on my throat wall.
I underwent a nasopharyngoscopy at that time, and there were no abnormalities.
Is this occurrence incidental, or should I get checked again? I have had several endoscopic examinations in the past, and they all indicated no issues.
I also had an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, which did not reveal any problems with the esophagus, only mild gastroesophageal reflux.

Jie, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2014/09/28

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hi Jie: Hello, if the bleeding occurs occasionally and you have previously undergone thorough examinations, it is mostly likely to be incidental.
However, if the bleeding occurs frequently, it is necessary to visit a clinic or hospital for further evaluation.
Wishing you peace and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Blood streaks in the throat can be concerning, especially if they occur repeatedly or are accompanied by other symptoms. In your case, since you have experienced blood streaks in your throat before and have undergone several examinations, including a nasopharyngoscopy and an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), it is understandable to feel anxious about this recurrence.

First, it is important to consider the potential causes of blood streaks in the throat. Common reasons may include:
1. Irritation or Injury: Brushing your teeth too vigorously or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can irritate the gums and throat, leading to minor bleeding. Additionally, if you have allergies or a dry throat, coughing or clearing your throat can cause small blood vessels to rupture.

2. Infections: Conditions such as pharyngitis or tonsillitis can cause inflammation and bleeding in the throat. If you have had a recent cold or respiratory infection, this could be a contributing factor.

3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): You mentioned having mild gastroesophageal reflux. Acid reflux can irritate the lining of the throat and esophagus, potentially leading to bleeding.

4. Nasal Issues: Sometimes, bleeding can originate from the nasal passages and drip down into the throat, especially if you have had nasal congestion or sinus issues.

5. Underlying Conditions: Although less common, conditions such as blood disorders, tumors, or other serious health issues could also cause blood in the throat.

Given that you have had previous examinations that did not reveal any significant issues, it is possible that this occurrence is related to irritation or a minor injury. However, since you have experienced this symptom multiple times, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
Here are some recommendations:
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms that may accompany the blood streaks, such as pain, difficulty swallowing, or changes in voice. This information can be helpful for your doctor.

- Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that brushing your teeth or throat clearing may be causing the bleeding, consider adjusting your technique or using a softer toothbrush.

- Stay Hydrated: Keeping your throat moist can help prevent irritation. Drink plenty of water and consider using a humidifier if the air in your environment is dry.

- Follow Up with a Specialist: If the blood streaks persist or worsen, it may be beneficial to see an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist for a more thorough examination. They may recommend additional tests or imaging studies to rule out any underlying conditions.

In summary, while occasional blood streaks in the throat can be benign, the recurrence of this symptom warrants further investigation. It is always better to err on the side of caution and seek medical advice to ensure that there are no underlying health concerns.
