Medications for balanitis?
Hello Doctor, for the past two days, I have been experiencing swelling and itching of the foreskin, along with some minor cracks.
There is a stinging sensation when urinating and during cleaning.
I looked up some of your responses online, and my symptoms seem to match what you described as balanitis.
After visiting the clinic, the doctor only mentioned it was an injury and prescribed me gentamicin cream and zinc oxide.
However, I still feel very itchy after applying the medication.
I'm not sure if these two medications are appropriate, or if I need to seek further medical attention.
Thank you.

Hello, it seems you may have a case of balanitis.
You can improve hygiene, but avoid using any cleaning products.
An ointment would be appropriate, and it will take time to heal.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask, and we can discuss it further.
Please note that online responses should only be used as a reference; if necessary, you should visit a medical facility for treatment.

Balanitis, an inflammation of the glans penis, can be caused by various factors including infections, irritants, or underlying medical conditions. The symptoms you describe—swelling, itching, small cracks, and pain during urination—are indeed consistent with balanitis. The treatment options for balanitis depend on the underlying cause, and it’s essential to address this to achieve effective relief.
The medications prescribed to you, gentamicin cream and zinc oxide, have specific roles in managing symptoms associated with balanitis. Gentamicin is an antibiotic that can help treat bacterial infections, while zinc oxide is often used as a protective barrier and can soothe irritated skin. However, if your symptoms persist or worsen despite using these medications, it may indicate that the treatment is not adequately addressing the underlying cause of your balanitis.
Here are some considerations regarding your treatment and potential next steps:
1. Gentamicin Cream: This medication is effective against certain bacterial infections. If your balanitis is caused by a bacterial infection, gentamicin may be appropriate. However, if the cause is fungal (such as a yeast infection) or due to irritation (from soaps, detergents, or other irritants), gentamicin may not be effective.
2. Zinc Oxide: This topical agent is commonly used to protect and soothe irritated skin. It can help reduce inflammation and provide a barrier against further irritation. However, it does not have antibacterial or antifungal properties, so it may not address the root cause of an infection.
3. Potential Causes: Balanitis can be caused by a variety of factors including:
- Infections: Bacterial, fungal (like Candida), or viral infections can lead to balanitis.
- Irritants: Soaps, lotions, or other products that come into contact with the genital area can cause irritation.
- Underlying Conditions: Conditions such as diabetes can predispose individuals to infections, including balanitis.
4. Next Steps: If you continue to experience itching and discomfort, it may be beneficial to return to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may consider:
- Fungal Infection Treatment: If a yeast infection is suspected, antifungal creams or medications may be prescribed.
- Corticosteroids: In cases of inflammation without infection, topical corticosteroids may help reduce inflammation and itching.
- Further Testing: If the cause remains unclear, your doctor may recommend tests to identify any underlying conditions or specific infections.
5. Self-Care Measures: In addition to medication, consider the following self-care tips:
- Gentle Hygiene: Clean the area gently with mild soap and water, avoiding harsh soaps or irritants.
- Avoid Irritants: Refrain from using scented products or lotions in the genital area.
- Loose Clothing: Wear loose-fitting underwear and clothing to reduce friction and irritation.
In conclusion, while gentamicin cream and zinc oxide may provide some relief, it’s crucial to ensure that the treatment aligns with the underlying cause of your balanitis. If symptoms persist, seeking further medical advice is essential to explore additional treatment options and ensure proper management of your condition.
