Ear water retention & nasal polyps
Dear Doctor: Will the symptoms of ear discomfort caused by water entering the ear while swimming gradually heal? Should I be concerned about a suddenly appearing painless polyp in my nose?
Tammy, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2014/10/31
Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hi Tammy: If the eardrum is intact, ear fullness caused by swimming is usually due to a small amount of water entering the external auditory canal.
This should resolve within a few days as the water dries up, or you can try tilting your head to one side and hopping on one foot to help expel the water.
However, if the fullness persists, it may indicate external auditory canal inflammation or blockage due to earwax absorbing water and swelling, which would require medical examination and treatment.
As for the sudden appearance of polyps in the nasal cavity, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

When it comes to ear discomfort after swimming, commonly referred to as "swimmer's ear," it is essential to understand the underlying causes and the potential implications of nasal polyps. The sensation of water trapped in the ear can lead to feelings of fullness, discomfort, and even temporary hearing loss. This condition is typically caused by water getting trapped in the ear canal, which can create a breeding ground for bacteria and lead to infections if not addressed properly.
In most cases, the discomfort from water in the ear will resolve on its own as the water drains out. However, if the feeling persists for more than a day or two, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can examine the ear to ensure there is no infection or other underlying issues, such as earwax buildup or damage to the eardrum. Techniques such as tilting the head, pulling on the earlobe, or using a hairdryer on a low setting can sometimes help to facilitate drainage. However, it is crucial to avoid inserting any objects into the ear canal, as this can lead to further complications.
On the other hand, the sudden appearance of painless nasal polyps should not be ignored. Nasal polyps are soft, noncancerous growths that develop on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses, often as a result of chronic inflammation due to conditions like allergies, asthma, or chronic sinus infections. While they are typically painless, their presence can lead to symptoms such as nasal congestion, reduced sense of smell, and frequent sinus infections.
If you notice the development of nasal polyps, it is essential to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, often using nasal endoscopy, to assess the size and location of the polyps and determine the best course of action. Treatment options may include corticosteroid nasal sprays to reduce inflammation, oral corticosteroids for larger polyps, or even surgical intervention if the polyps are significantly obstructing the nasal passages or causing other complications.
In summary, while ear discomfort from swimming may resolve on its own, persistent symptoms warrant a medical evaluation. Similarly, the appearance of nasal polyps should be taken seriously, as they can indicate underlying chronic conditions that may require treatment. Regular check-ups with an ENT specialist can help manage these issues effectively and improve overall quality of life. If you experience any additional symptoms such as pain, fever, or significant changes in hearing or smell, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
