Increased dark brown discharge before menstruation?
Hello, doctor.
I have been experiencing discharge before or after my period for one to two years, but it's not every month, and the amount varies each time.
This time, however, it has been particularly heavy.
My last menstrual period started on October 25, and I had sexual intercourse on November 2, during which a condom was used, and I checked for any leaks.
On November 7, my ex-boyfriend's penis made contact with my genital area, but I am unsure if there was any arousal.
Starting on November 11, I noticed brown discharge, but the amount was very small until November 14, when it suddenly increased significantly.
Is it possible that this could be implantation bleeding from pregnancy, or could it be due to poor uterine contractions? I have congenital hypothyroidism; could that be related? I have also been experiencing some abdominal discomfort and pain, but my breasts are not swollen or painful.
I took a pregnancy test, which was negative, but I am concerned about its accuracy.
What could be the cause of these symptoms?

In response to the increased secretion, inflammation should be prioritized as a consideration, followed by endometrial hyperplasia or the presence of polyps.
The influence of ovulation and hormonal secretion abnormalities should also be taken into account.
Please visit a gynecologist for further examination and confirmation.
If menstruation starts on October 25, it is generally advisable to wait until after November 25 to take a pregnancy test to confirm whether you are pregnant.
Sincerely, Dr.

Understanding dark brown discharge before menstruation can be a source of concern for many individuals. The presence of such discharge, especially if it has been occurring intermittently over the past couple of years, can be attributed to various factors. In your case, the timing of the discharge in relation to your menstrual cycle and sexual activity raises several possibilities.
Firstly, it is important to note that dark brown discharge is often old blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including hormonal fluctuations, which can be influenced by conditions such as thyroid dysfunction. Given your history of congenital hypothyroidism, it is possible that your hormonal balance is affected, which could contribute to irregularities in your menstrual cycle and discharge patterns.
The timing of your discharge, particularly the increase in volume from November 11, could suggest several scenarios. One possibility is that this could be related to ovulation or the luteal phase of your menstrual cycle. Some women experience spotting or discharge due to hormonal changes during these times. Additionally, if you have had any recent stress or changes in your lifestyle, these could also impact your menstrual cycle and lead to unusual discharge.
Regarding your concern about implantation bleeding, it is typically lighter and shorter in duration than a regular period. Since you mentioned that you had a negative pregnancy test, it is less likely that the discharge is due to implantation bleeding, especially if you have been using protection during sexual intercourse. However, it is important to remember that home pregnancy tests can sometimes yield false negatives, particularly if taken too early.
Another consideration is the possibility of cervical or uterine issues, such as polyps or fibroids, which can cause abnormal discharge. If you are experiencing abdominal discomfort alongside the discharge, it may warrant further investigation to rule out any underlying conditions.
In terms of your symptoms, including the abdominal discomfort and changes in discharge, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They may suggest a pelvic examination or ultrasound to assess for any abnormalities in the reproductive organs. Additionally, they can evaluate your thyroid function to ensure that your hormone levels are within an appropriate range.
In summary, while dark brown discharge can be a normal occurrence for some women, especially in relation to their menstrual cycle, it can also indicate underlying issues that may require medical attention. Given your history of thyroid dysfunction and the recent changes in your discharge, it is crucial to seek professional advice to ensure that any potential concerns are addressed. Regular monitoring of your symptoms and open communication with your healthcare provider will be key in managing your reproductive health effectively.
