Bleeding with bowel movements due to internal hemorrhoids?
Hello doctor, I apologize for continuously asking questions.
I would like to inquire about the situation after receiving the sclerotherapy injection for internal hemorrhoids today.
After having a bowel movement, there was no blood when wiping, but there was fresh red blood attached to the stool that did not dissolve in the water.
This did not occur before the injection.
Could this be related to the injection? Thank you.

Mild bleeding within a week after sclerotherapy injection is a normal occurrence, as long as there is no significant bleeding or symptoms such as fever and pain.

After undergoing hemorrhoid sclerotherapy, it is not uncommon for patients to experience some bleeding or the presence of blood in their stool. The situation you described, where you noticed fresh red blood on the surface of your stool but no blood when wiping, can be concerning, but it is important to understand the context of this procedure and the potential causes of your symptoms.
Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a sclerosing agent into the hemorrhoidal tissue, which causes the tissue to harden and eventually shrink. This procedure is generally safe and effective for treating hemorrhoids, particularly internal hemorrhoids. However, like any medical procedure, it can have side effects, including bleeding.
The presence of fresh red blood on the stool can indicate a few things:
1. Post-Procedure Bleeding: After sclerotherapy, it is possible to experience some bleeding from the injection site or from the hemorrhoids themselves. This bleeding can be minor and may resolve on its own. The blood you see may be from the treated hemorrhoids as they respond to the sclerosing agent.
2. Anal Fissures or Irritation: The procedure may cause irritation to the anal canal, leading to small tears (fissures) or increased sensitivity. This can result in minor bleeding, especially during bowel movements.
3. Normal Bowel Movement Changes: Sometimes, changes in bowel habits or the consistency of stool can lead to minor bleeding. If you have been experiencing constipation or straining, this could contribute to the presence of blood.
4. Infection or Complications: Although rare, there is a possibility of infection or other complications following sclerotherapy. If the bleeding persists or is accompanied by pain, fever, or other concerning symptoms, it is essential to seek medical attention.
In your case, since you did not notice any blood when wiping, it may suggest that the bleeding is minimal and not coming from a significant source. However, it is crucial to monitor the situation closely. If the bleeding continues, increases in volume, or if you experience any additional symptoms such as severe pain, fever, or changes in bowel habits, you should contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, while some bleeding can be expected after hemorrhoid sclerotherapy, it is essential to differentiate between minor post-procedural bleeding and more serious complications. If you have any concerns about your symptoms or if they worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for advice and possible follow-up care. They can provide you with the best guidance based on your specific situation and medical history.
