Regarding the glans penis?

Dr.
Hsu, I apologize for the inquiry.
I would like to ask about the color of the glans penis when not erect.
The areas near the sides of the glans, close to the urethra, appear more bluish-gray, while the majority of the center of the glans is red, sometimes mixed with a bit of bluish-purple or grayish-blue.
When erect, the sides appear a dark reddish-purple.
Is this normal? (Upon closer inspection, I feel that the color distribution of the glans is not very uniform.)

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2014/11/26

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, the color of the glans is related to the degree of congestion.
More congestion will result in a redder appearance.
However, if congestion lasts too long, it may turn a purplish color.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again for further discussion and research.

When it comes to the color variations of the glans penis, it is important to understand that some degree of color variation is normal and can be influenced by several factors, including blood flow, skin pigmentation, and individual anatomical differences.
In a non-erect state, the glans may appear more pale or even have a bluish or grayish tint, particularly on the sides near the urethra. This can be attributed to the reduced blood flow in a relaxed state. The central part of the glans often appears redder due to a higher concentration of blood vessels and the thinner skin in that area, which allows the underlying blood vessels to be more visible.
During an erection, the increased blood flow causes the glans to become engorged, resulting in a darker red or even purplish hue. This is a normal physiological response and indicates healthy blood circulation. The uneven distribution of color you observe may also be a normal anatomical variation.
However, there are certain conditions that could lead to abnormal color changes or other symptoms. For instance, if you notice any significant changes in color that are accompanied by pain, swelling, or discharge, it could indicate an underlying issue such as an infection, inflammation, or other medical conditions. Conditions like balanitis (inflammation of the glans), sexually transmitted infections, or other dermatological issues can present with changes in color and should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

If the color variations you are experiencing do not come with any discomfort, pain, or other concerning symptoms, they are likely within the range of normal anatomical variation. However, if you have any doubts or if the appearance changes significantly or is accompanied by other symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough examination and appropriate guidance.

In summary, while some color variation in the glans penis is normal, especially in relation to blood flow and individual anatomy, any significant changes or accompanying symptoms should prompt a visit to a healthcare professional for further evaluation. Regular self-examinations and awareness of your body can help you identify any changes that may require medical attention.
